Veterans are men and women who have fought to protect our right to be free. These people put their lives on the line; risking the loss of bones, organs or even memory. These are extraordinary human beings if I say so myself. They deserve to be treated like royalty, yet more than 67% of the homeless population have served for our country for at least than 3 years. 47% of them served in the Vietnam War. This goes to show how “united” the United States really is.
On any given night between 130,000 and 200,000 veterans sleep out in the streets. Three times that many are struggling with excessive rent burdens and at an increased risk of homelessness. “More than 40,000 homeless veterans receive compensation or pension benefits each month, but that’s not enough to find affordable housing” according to the national coalition for homeless …show more content…
They fought for our freedom and to repay them, we threw them out into the world and forgot of their existence.
There are many organizations in the U.S trying to raise awareness of this unjust act. For example “The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the resource and technical assistance center for a national network of community-based service providers and local, state and federal agencies that provide emergency and supportive housing, food, health services, job training and placement assistance.” According to nchv.org. As well as Support Homeless Veterans Inc created in 2011, whose primary goal is to “bring quality of life to these forgotten Hero’s.” These support groups are saluted, but they can not do it all on their own. In order for the course to take action we need all hands on deck. The entire country needs to pitch in; whether it’s through donating money, goods or even taking the time out of your day to lend a helping hand. This is the least us, as a country could
