Analyzing Louise Glgal's Poem 'Widows'
Louise Glück poem "Widows" was based on a child's point of view on how they saw their mother. The reading starts out as explaining the lifestyle that the grandmother raised all of her daughters and some of the expectations she expected. The grandmother taught all of her kids how to play card games, especially during the hot summer days. But on this particular day, the author described the mother as being "weary" (p. 1285). The mother lost her husband around the same time last year, and she is taking the summer time a little hard. This poem stood out to me because the poem stated "my grandmother thought ... they have each other. They don't need any more companionship". This stood out to me because a lot of times women feel as if they are suffering

Unfortunately the relationship between the speaker and the mother in the poem is unclear as it is stated that her mother has passed away and is in a grave, which is shown here in the following excerpt “… into the grave!” but all throughout the poem she speaks of her mother’s courage, which is shown here “courage that my mother had. Went with her, and is with her still… if instead she’d left to me. The thing she took into the grave!–That courage like a rock” which is not typically something that is said by someone who didn’t have a good relationship with the person who’d passed…

The poem that I will analyze is from Sharon Olds, The Girl. This poem is quite graphic but it describes a life lesson that two girls had to endure. This poem describes a graphic preplanned rape event. The girls were 12 years old, it seems that they were at the wrong place and living a wild life, and getting involved with the erroneous people. They partied with their supposed best friend, this is what I am getting from the poem, they were being chased and after being caught they were raped. During trial they were asked to state what had happened to them. They exclaimed who their rapist were. After they went through that, the author goes along in explaining how one of the girls’ lives had changed. The fact that she no longer went to parties that smoked and did wild things. The girl was considered a good girl, a girl that thanked God, and a girl that had cheerleading in her life.…

The poem “Beauty” by the author Tony Hoagland is a piece about the true beauty of a woman. Not the outside physical features but what makes a girl a girl and a woman a woman. True inner beauty, the special flower that girls hold so dear. Hoagland uses extended metaphor, third person point of view, and imagery to portray the loss of a woman’s virginity by comparing it to the strive to be beautiful to gain the acceptance of society.…

In this poem “The Mother” it was this mother that had many abortions. This speaker was having an emotional breakdown. For example, “I have heard in the voices of the wind the voices of my dim killed children” (Brooks 1940). When reading ‘’The Mother’’ the speaker talked about her and focused on the children she aborted. But the speaker never mentioned a father. So, after realizing she did not mention a father this question came to an understanding. Why do people have different emotional and physical feelings after abortions? When asking that question by people it means men and women. There is evidence of when it comes to abortions, many people do not think about the men withdrawals. Abortions, which are the discontinuation of a pregnancy before…

She has no family but nature. She lives out of doors on the moors of Scotland in a wide world and in a wide nature. Her brothers were the “craggy hills, and her sisters larchen trees” (Found in Poem). Her bath was the river, and she had no food, “an old red cloak” she wore that the weather was cold. “A chip hat she had on” and she would at least she would stare at the moon when there is nothing to do. She made her garlanding (flowers etc.), plaited mats and gave them to cottagers she met she met along the bush. She wove and she would sing (Stanza 5). She does not talk to anyone but her book is a church-yard tomb. Her environment is unclean because she sleeps under trees in a brown heath turf bed that is not comfortable and a place where people hardly seen very emotional and inspiring that helped me to understand the main fact of the poem and I felt mournful about the life that others out there is living. Her world is her life of challenge, she has No rule, No expectations but lived as she did…

This poem had reminded me of the time when I was at the hospital because my aunt was extremely sick and was about to die. I remember as I was walking out of the hospital and there was this dad who was very happy and giving everyone at the hospital cupcakes out because his wife gave birth to their first child. As I walked passed this newly made dad I realized that ones best day could another persons worst day; and then at that moment I understood the circle of life, where there is ones birth there is ones death, and vise versa.…

I realized that this poem was about a son and a mother that was grieving over the death of his father, and her husband. They both that day had thought about the father and husband cause the son had called that day to talk to his father. That's when he found out that his mother, had made coffee for his father and had put it on the table like she does everyday for him. They both knew that he had been deceased for a year now. I know the death of a family member can be a traumatic thing for most families to every experience in their lifetime.…

This Louise Gluck poem seems to be a continuation of the original Hansel and Gretel fairy tale. Gluck sets a rather sad and depressing tone throughout the poem in order to portray that Gretel has been living with guilt and fear. From the beginning of the poem it states that Gretel “hears the witch’s cry break in the moonlight,” which reveals that even though the kids are back safe and sound with their father, Gretel is still having haunting memories of the witch screaming and crying from the day that she killed her in order to save her brother’s life. The poem then continues to add other scenarios that help justify this argument. Gretel later asks herself, “why do I not forget?” This illustrates the fact that Gretel does everything in her…

“We Alone”: In the poem, “We Alone”, it talked about rare objects especially gold. I think that the gold represents wealth because some people don’t respect rare items and if you have something very expensive, some just want to show it off. The chain also represents wealth. This is because the chain can make you what you want to be and it can also make you what you’re worth.…

“Gretel in Darkness,” a poem by Louise Gluck is an example of a poem revisiting a renowned fable, but it gives its readers a new perspective by crediting the important things that happened in the tale. Throughout the four stanzas in this poem, it appears that it doesnt have a clear rhyme scheme. Louise Gluck, urges the readers of this poem to try to think about fairytales a different way. Therefore, she allows the readers to find out the reasoning behind the pain and suffering that Gretel went through by the use of her superior language. The author of the poem, Louise Gluck uses the word ‘darkness’ to compare it to how the women are portrayed in a patriarchal society.…
