Analyzing Peterson's Life In A Crowded Place

I was appreciative of the introduced holistic teaching view. In the midst of focusing on the methods of behavior management, my view of teaching was losing an aspect of joy. However, reading the ideas within Life in a Crowded Place reinforced some of the reasons I had for entering the teaching field. The view of teaching presented by Peterson gives logical and important reasons to implement ceremonies, rituals, rites, and celebrations. The activities have numerous positive results including helping students focus on learning, keeping individuals connected to the big group, encouraging risk taking, and creating a sense of caring and belonging. In my current position, connecting with the students if one of my favorite parts. I would gladly
incorporate ceremonies, rituals, rites, and celebrations in my classroom recognizing the important and beneficial reasons for those activities. The art and science methods of teaching work together to provide a balance because when we’ve connected with our students in the ways described by Peterson and established CWPBIS, I believe students will be more likely to make appropriate behavior choices.
