Analyzing Rhetorical Techniques In William Carlos's Speech
Carlos, I thought did a lot better job to raise your voice so everyone in the room could hear what you were saying. I liked that you had visual aids throughout your presentation and a lot of the slides had some humor to them. However, I thought you should have had a few more slides that had a more serious approach because you are talking about a sad reality in the world. You did incorporate sources throughout the speech backing up the claims you were making. Carlos did use Pathos in his speech when he asked the audience how they would feel if one of their siblings was taken away from them. As for logos, he did have some good facts that helped the audience come to the realization of how serious the problem is. I think when you asked the audience …show more content…
Although you did look at your notes a little longer than I would have liked, you looked at your notes a lot less and it made it look like you were really on top of your stuff. Another big thing for me is you raised your voice and you looked more comfortable in front of the class. You also incorporated humor into the speech which I think is necessary when talking about something so sad but I think you should do next time is maybe incorporate a little less funny jokes just to show you are truly saddened by what's going on. I think adding the visual aid was really important because I think it helped keep you on track and on pace.

After hearing his speech for me personally, it surprised me that we still have this problem in the world today. I thought as the world that we were past child labor and sadly we are not. It's sad to see kids that cant even understand whats going because they have not fully developed being forced by adults to do work for free. The toll that it takes on the child not just mentally but physically down the road because of the terrible working conditions. I just want everyone to get a fair shot and because of child labor, it feels like they don't even get a chance and that's what truly saddens

John Lewis introduces pathos into his speech when he is describing the violent methods of the government against blacks. For example, Lewis vividly describes the notorious actions of the government when saying, “What did the federal government do when local police officials kicked and assaulted the pregnant wife of Slater King, and she lost her baby?” (para. 6). In this statement, Lewis shows how the government has failed to keep black people safe and continue to harm them, and that these people harmed can not recover from the pain they have received. Lewis utilizes pathos in order to gain the audience's support, to gain their sympathy and perhaps make the event sound more gruesome than it actually was, which nonetheless was an inhumane act…

You're very right about the Americans being just as deceptive as the Spanish. I believe that they are just as bad as the Spanish, just in a nicer manner. Instead of chasing them off of their land like the Spanish, they convinced them to leave. I don't think it was right for them to make the Indians leave their mother country because that should have been their land; not the Americans land. The Indians left their land in such horrible condition; the old people didn't have clothes, some people were sick, and the mothers had to carry their kids on their backs.…

All can relate to that one special time of the year, Christmas, when whole families unite and spend hours endlessly sharing stories, making memories, and of course, opening presents! What happens though, when all of the sentimental value of Christmas is replaced solely with physical value, the gifts? What would Christmas be like then? Richard Rodriguez takes the readers through one of his annual Christmases and brings to light, through his thoughts, the disconnect that exists between himself, his siblings, and his parents. Rodriguez’ chronological presentation of events with flashbacks, short, abrupt syntax, light-hearted attention to detail and concerned tone contribute to suggest his worried attitude toward his family.…

William Cuthbert Faulkner, Mississippi born author, took stage upon the winter of nineteen fifty to accept his Nobel Prize in Literature of nineteen forty-nine because of "his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel". Despite having dropped out of school at an early age and only completing a single year in college, Faulkner’s career as a writer is well credible through awards not limited to the Nobel Prize for Literature. Some of which include two National Book Awards and two of the more well-known Pulitzer Prizes. Writing notorious novels such as The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying and Light in August, Faulkner cautiously celebrated his accomplishment with a message that will forever change the field of literature. Under his belt, Faulkner went on to write a vast collection of poems, short stories, and more. Throughout his speech, he used rhetorical devices such as tone, modes of persuasion and extrinsic proofs to directly convey his message, that of which was wildly neglected by many authors of literature until brought forward by Faulkner. His speech,…

Overall, he needed to work on the persuasive aspects of his speech. When listening to the delivery, it almost sounded like an informative speech about all the different benefits of turf fields. I did not really understand what the action steps were for Sam’s topic because the turf fields is already been approved to be built at the Lakeland campus. I think his topic could have been improved if he changed the direction of his topic a little bit. For example, his topic could have been, “To persuade the class to support the development of the new turf field.” This way, he could use the same supporting data with a more directed action step and make his topic more personal for the students. Lastly, I believe his speech could benefit from a more developed introduction and conclusion. He started his speech with a good attention grabber and photos, but then, simply jumped into his speech. His introduction could be improved by giving a preview of his main points and stating where he got his facts from before the body of his speech. The same goes for Sam’s conclusion, it needed better organization. He signaled the end of his speech and reemphasized a few main points, but he missed a good sign-off with an established action steps. Overall, his weaknesses could be improved through better organization and more practice with his introduction and…

Faulkner's speech was short. He introduces his main point at the beginning of the second paragraph, “Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so long sustained by now that we can even bear it.”.He was speaking in 1950. The Cold War between the United States and the U.S.S.R. had begun. Both sides were building more and more atomic weapons. The U.S.S. R. was building enormous long-range missiles to deliver the atomic warheads anywhere in America. The U.S. had short-range missiles pointed at the U.S.S.R. from bases in Europe and elsewhere, as well as bombing planes based within easy striking distance of the Soviet cities and military targets. Everyone in the world could see that the two superpowers would soon have enough bombs…

The speech reached me in ways that may not have reached others. I find that I am always my worst enemy when it comes to reaching my goals. It’s not a lack of confidence but a penchant of making excuses and not going all the way in trying to achieve my goals. It’s almost like become afraid of my actual potential. After watching this seminar, I now see that as long as I remain in this mindset, I’m never going to be all the way happy. I don’t like having that “what if” feeling, and unless I do something about it, that’s the way stuff is going to be.…

Gaining the attention of my audience I felt was strong. I related to my young audience by talking about recycling since the awareness of recycling is very prevalent these days. I compared the two on the level that you recycle your plastic water bottle because you have no use for them after you drink it and although you don’t see immediate personal results from recycling, you know it is for a good cause of others. This related to organ donation for the fact that once you pass you no longer have a need for your organs or tissue and by donation you are helping others. I believe this approach was effective.…

My heart continued to pound even after it was over, though, until the class period was over. It was nice to be done and enjoy other people's speeches without worrying about mine. I felt like my shield was good; the picture and other things I had on my shield were easy to see, and my reveal technique was good. My bookshelf began empty at the beginning of my speech and filled up throughout. I felt that my attention getter and conclusion went well and tied together nicely. I don't remember how my eye contact was because I was so focused on getting through the speech. The only time I really used notecards was for my introduction and conclusion, so I hope my eye contact was okay because of that. I also think that speed, vocalized pauses, and planning what I had to say, in some parts, could use some…

As I walked down the steps, I was filled with a newfound self-confidence and purpose, with cheers and excitement from the audience still ringing in the room.…
