Shield Speech Class Analysis
To prepare for my shield speech, I used time in class to write my outline and consulted other around me about my ideas. I thought of first representing each point with a book, and then later came to the idea of a bookshelf I could put props and pictures on. I admit that I did procrastinate while writing my speech. I could've used my time in class better to figure out what I was going to say. My slip, which I folded very many times so it was very small, was chosen first. I wouldn't have made the slip so small if I had been focusing on Mr. Stauffer telling the class that he picked the small one first instead of focusing on making my paper small. Oh well. I went first, and I felt I didn't have as much time to prepare. I worked hard after school in the two days I had. I planned out notecards; I had a rough draft, and then a "final draft" of the notecards. The night before my speech, a Tuesday, I ran my speech over and over again, timing it each time. I got so involved in it that I almost missed my quintet rehearsal that night. I saw that the time was 7:18 PM during my speech, and I had to be at rehearsal at 7:20! I felt …show more content…
My heart continued to pound even after it was over, though, until the class period was over. It was nice to be done and enjoy other people's speeches without worrying about mine. I felt like my shield was good; the picture and other things I had on my shield were easy to see, and my reveal technique was good. My bookshelf began empty at the beginning of my speech and filled up throughout. I felt that my attention getter and conclusion went well and tied together nicely. I don't remember how my eye contact was because I was so focused on getting through the speech. The only time I really used notecards was for my introduction and conclusion, so I hope my eye contact was okay because of that. I also think that speed, vocalized pauses, and planning what I had to say, in some parts, could use some

Although you did look at your notes a little longer than I would have liked, you looked at your notes a lot less and it made it look like you were really on top of your stuff. Another big thing for me is you raised your voice and you looked more comfortable in front of the class. You also incorporated humor into the speech which I think is necessary when talking about something so sad but I think you should do next time is maybe incorporate a little less funny jokes just to show you are truly saddened by what's going on. I think adding the visual aid was really important because I think it helped keep you on track and on pace.…

Johnson uses several key elements of a great speech to target his audience. One of the key elements he uses are powerful metaphors and paints vivid imagery. In the speech at the University of Michigan, Johnson says several metaphors and vivid imagery. One of the first is “I have come today from the turmoil of your capital to the tranquility of you campus to speak about the future of your country.” He is making a comparison to the nation's capital to the university campus and connecting to the audience. He goes on to say, The Great Society rests on abundance and liberty for all. This gives the Great Society a physical feature that can be felt, seen, and weighed. He is describing a solid foundation, which most believe is important for all things…

I started off my presentation by introducing myself to the class. When introducing myself I informed the class of my name, job title, workplace, the type of students that I teach and what I teach. I do this to give a clear outline of who I am and my job role. During my presentation I tried not to speak too fast, tried to make eye contact with the whole group and ensured that I didn’t remain static.…

It was very obvious that she was experienced in the art of public speaking and seemed very confident throughout her delivery. Her posture we very professional yet, remained relaxed making it seem very natural. Ms.Lafaive did not move around the stage at all but was often gesturing toward her charts and graphs, sort of letting the audience know what was relevant to what she was currently saying. There where a few times throughout the speech that I could not hear the speaker well, but it was more due to the loudness of the audience than the loudness of the speakers voice. Overall though, her tone, pitch and voice variety was engaging. Ms. Lafaive was dressed very appropriately; wearing neutral, almost plain colors, she looked very professional. Her eye contact was slightly sporadic and she looked at her graphs…

I had to plan ahead in order to make sure that I accomplish the assignments for this class while still attending the board meetings for the organizations I was a part of. By looking at my Participation paper I was there for a majority of my class days and the only reason I missed class was because of really bad allergies and when I received bronchitis for week and a half. By going to class I was able to get tips on how to make my work better and how to accomplish the tasks given to us better thus making it less stressful for me to finish the project meaning I was more likely to finish the project earlier than the time given to us. When I realized that going to class and doing my work before the due date made me less stressed out I tried my hardest to always finish my work in all my class on time making me have a less stressful week. Another example of my improvement in this area is when we look at my Communication improvement profile paper written in the beginning of the year. I wrote the paper the night before and really didn’t look at the rule brick on how everything needed to be organized. When looking at this paper I followed the rule brick the best I can and wrote this paper before the due date allowing me to continually correct the grammar mistakes I have made and other problems that could have been found in this paper. Taking…

When I watched my presentation, I saw how I started with a strong introduction with a rhetorical question. I by saying “Who would you call? What would you do? How would you handle the situation? All these questions may be hard for you to answer in your crisis. I got the answer to clean up the mess you got yourself into.” Also, I give the audience a vision by saying “Let’s say your life is being broadcast all over the media or maybe even your company. We all know One of your biggest fears would be getting caught in a scandal or having a bad rep.” You got all part of my introduction to the greeting, thesis, credibility, and overview. I also, had the personality to my speech when talking you could see how enthusiastic I was to the audience. This made my speech be interesting and not dull and my voice a great projectile for everyone in the class to hear. In my speech, I had great eye contact so I had the attention, keen interest, and understanding for my classmates. None verbal communication is “Behaviors, symbols, attributes, or objects—whether intended or not—that communicate messages with social meaning.” In my body of my speech, I provided information in chronically order as my overview. I give great information about the education requirements, job outlook, and Pros and…

The “Declaration of the Kind Addressed to All the French About His Flight from Paris” on June 21, 1971, has a pretty straightforward title because this document is just that. The previous day the king and his family had tried to escape France, only to be discovered a day’s journey away from the border. In this speech, possibly given by an announcer on the square due to its lack of first person pronouns, the king gives his point of view about what he thinks about France, where it is heading, and what has happened. He tries to explain why he left.…

I selected a speech that was given by Manal- Al Sharif. The speech was entitled “A Saudi woman who dared to drive”. The speech was delivered sometime in June 2013. SAY, the Stuttering Association for the Youth, makes children who stutter feel less alone, and feel more self-confident. Stuttering can make a person repeat, or stretch out syllables, and/or become silent in the middle of a word or sentence. As mentioned in the article,” The Incredible Power of Speech”, it’s no surprise that scientists find it difficult to discover a cure for stuttering. The complex production of your voice includes the working together of your body parts. Despite the curing process being a hard and an extremely complicated one, according to, “The Incredible Power of Speech”, scientists have managed to pinpoint parts of the brain that control speech.…

I used dread the discomfort that arose from public speaking and avoided every class presentation, which to my frustration, resulted in missing exciting opportunities. During my sophomore year of high school, I chose to take a speech class to embrace speaking opportunities instead of shying away from them. The first few days of class were nerve-racking, but steadily I gained more skill and confidence in my speaking abilities. Towards the close of sophomore year, I stepped into a leadership role, despite my previous anxieties. In a 100-student mock trial, I confidently presented the opening and closing statements for the defense.…

After the chat with Mr. Buckley I returned back to school. I still had the chills from his speech, but it was also raining and cold so that could have affected it also. During sixth and seventh period I sat there and actually focused. Usually I just talk and goof off with my friends, but I placed all my attention to my teachers and I actually learned something that day, instead of teaching it to myself at home.…

A big portion of my life I was a very secluded and quiet kid from middle school into freshman year of college. Being put in a class where all your assignments, quizzes, and tests were all based on your ability to speak to others sounded like a nightmare to me. Lesson after lesson I learned how to avoid plagiarism, the multiple parts of a speech, and even how to avoid speech anxiety. When it was my designated day to speak, even with all the information taught, it was the worst speech given that day due to how timid I was talking. As the days went hearing other people give their first speech helped me to understand something, that I was not alone. There were others in the class that were as bad or worse than I was at delivering speeches. After the initial speech my confidence for myself grew as I prepared for the speeches throughout the…

It was my point of view on the death penalty, so naturally it was a touchy subject to begin with. The nature of the topic made it more difficult for me to execute (no pun intended) my speech. I walked up to the podium, fixed my papers, and started reading. The class was silent. It felt like I was reading for hours, but it took me only 10 minutes. At the end of the speech, my teacher asked for opinions and critiques. One boy said he agreed with my point of view. Another girl said, "I admired how passionate you were about what you were saying." That comment built up my non-existent confidence. It made me come to terms with my problem. I then made it my personal mission to find a solution to this problem, or maybe I was still stuck in my Geometry class from first period, who knows. We did more and more presentations, sometimes alone and sometimes with a partner. My public speaking teacher was also a Drama teacher, so she wanted to incorporate a little part of her Drama class. The assignment was to read a monologue and act it out. Now, public speaking was hard enough for me, but acting in front of people was on a whole different level. I managed to complete the monologue without having a panic attack, so that was a good sign. By the time the school year was over, I had gotten more confident in my presentations. I could talk in front of a class without resembling a tomato! Mission…

In the speech, “Towards a True Refuge”, Aung San Suu Kyi’s evokes that the greatest threat to global security is not the insufficiency of the economy and the poor nations, but rather the systems inflexibility towards the community by not listening to their voice. In the beginning of the text Kyi states “Peace, stability and unity cannot be bought or coerced; they have to be nurtured by promoting a sensitivity to human needs and respect for the rights and opinions of others". This quote ties in with the claim by illustrating that all 3 factors can't be bought with any amount of material, but from understanding and accepting other humans, better known as the people. As some may do something they may not be enjoying the experience although it…
