Assignment 1: Best Short-Short Story
The short-short story “Mericans” by Sandra Cisneros is the best one amongst all the stories. “Mericans” is not as long as the other stories; moreover, the way this story is told makes it easy and enjoyable to read. Everyone pays more attention when a child speaks even if they are ranting about something not so important. The tone in which “Mericans” is narrated, the style Sandra uses, the point of view the reader is given, and the theme of the story makes “Mericans” the best short-short story.
Without question, the tone the story is narrated in is that of a child, Michele. Narrating the story in first person allows the reader to get a greater feel for the story. It is easier to understand more clearly the main points the writer is trying to put across. The reader is also much more engaged when the author is more involved. “Maybe and most probably my little brother is imagining he’s a flying feather dancer, like the ones we saw swinging high up from a pole on the Virgin’s birthday” (Roberts, 89).

The characters Tobias Wolff creates carry the central concept of the story home. Along with the cold setting and the point of view of the narrator; Powder makes for a great read. Powder is a well written story of a father and a son forcing their way home in a snow storm. Dad is not the main character in the story; but he is the complex character. He is the adult, a father at that too, yet he is reckless and impulsive. For example, insisting on a last run as it began to snow, regardless of his son’s anxiety and the promise he made to have him home in time for Christmas Eve dinner. Reading the story it is clear how the father thinks on the spot and immediately acts on it, without considering the consequences maybe or just thinking
