At one point in time it was easy for any American to get a job with little to know education experience. Times have changed however, and a college education is necessary for almost every job not in the fast food department. By the time you finish college for a certain job, the criteria could have easily changed making it to where you need an even higher education before getting the job of your dreams. Andrew Delbanco, Author of “Three Reasons College Still Matters” an article in his book, College: What it Was, Is, and Should Be, points out three main reasons why every American should attend college at some point in their life. Delbanco's whole essay is derived from the emotional appeal of different professors and college students. By incorporating all these quotes he is demonstrating how kindly people feel of college, to help express his point. Another great way he uses pathos, is by using eye-catching adjectives to entice his readers. Words such as, “alarming” “gloomy” “the best reason” “rarely” and many more. The goal of pathos is to create a favorable emotional affection of the audience towards a certain side of an argument. The overall ability to achieve pathos is by drawing up audience emotions. There are various ways to achieve an emotional reaction in the audience, but the way Delbanco enlists his reactions, are by arousing feelings that are associated with certain elements in literature such as style, strategies, types of speech, and adjectives. Since only a certain use of language can create emotional reactions in the audience, it is important that the writer incorporates words that draw an audience into the article. Another great way Deblanco uses pathos is by making an analogy or example out of smokers. I found that by using an activity that a large amount of americans do, he can draw in a larger audience. Delbanco makes a great point by stating that, “The best reason to end smoking is that people who don't smoke lead better lives. The best reason to care about college-who goes, and what happens to them when they get there- is not what it does for society in economic terms but what it can do for individuals, in both calculable and incalculable ways” Delbanco’s use of pathos is what made his essay more enjoyable to
