This job requires that they’re able to meet a high physical demand daily. The position requires repetitive bending, mopping, scrubbing, exposure to cleaning and disinfecting agents, and heavy lifting. They must also work well with animals because they will be exposed to and be responsible for the handling of dogs of multiple breeds, sizes, energy levels, backgrounds, and strengths. The staff member may also be handling many other species of animals, such as cats, rabbits, reptiles, mice, pigs, and other small or exotic pets. There are several places of work that have Animal Care Techs, such as, a city or county animal shelter, rescue center, laboratory or animal welfare organization. At the VHS & most places the training requirements include, the employee must have a high school diploma or equivalent and basic training provided by another experienced Animal Care Technician. It’s a low paying position where weekends and holidays may be required, plus it’s long, hard physical work. Though, like stated previously, this job will get the worker into physical shape, it can also be considered a negative because it doesn’t just happen on it’s own. The work isn’t easy, it’s very long and strenuous on the body. They will most likely have to work 40 hours a week. At places like the VHS, you’ll work 8am until 4:30pm. This job has very long shifts. They’ll also be exposed daily to cleaning and disinfecting agents, urine, and feces. Many people would consider the low pay & working on weekends and holidays a reason to not take the job. On average, only $30,000 is the annual salary. So, they would be considered either working class or lower middle class. People also don’t like working on weekends or holidays, obviously, but there are live animals depending on your maintenance of the place.
