Vet Technicia Case Summary
a. Phone Triage: The Veterinary Assistant and Veterinary Technician are the ones who normally answered the phones during my shift. Immediately after the client explained their chief complaint, they asked for a name and phone number in case the call was disconnected. Then proceeded to ask questions about the chief complaint. They never discounted the clients concerns.
b. Medical/Nursing Triage: If two or more emergency patients come in at the same time the Veterinary Technicians where there to triage who needs to be seen the quickest or if there was something they could do to help stabilize the patient before the DVM could step in. Most of this included providing oxygen, assisting in radiology, setting up diagnostic tests, prepping for surgery,

We also need to be able to properly collect diagnostic specimens for analysis such as urine, blood, and feces. Should be able to assess the patient thoroughly.
The phone triage at CARE Hospital was a learning experience for me, to hear the employees taking so much time and care for each phone call really motivated me. Some of the questions I heard the LVT ask and what we talked about was making sure to get client name and phone number in case the call is dropped. Then get back to the chief complaint. Ask how the breathing is? Is the animal interacting with you? How is the animal’s attitude? Any vomiting/diarrhea? Duration of the symptoms, and character of the vomit or

Advanced Life Support is emergency medical care that may include defibrillation, airway management, and use of drugs and medications. Comparatively, Basic Life Support is emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation, control of bleeding, treatment of shock, acidosis, and poisoning; stabilization of injuries and wounds; and basic first aid. If a patient comes in respiratory distress the Veterinary Assistant or Technician will ask the client if they would like CPR to be done on their patient. If so, do they want Basic Life Support or Advanced Life Support? LVT explained to me that their practice doesn’t use BLS and ALS. The ones they do use at this facility is DNR, CPR, and AND. The AND stands for Allow Natural

For example, Julie Legred, a veterinary technician and executive director at the National Association of veterinary technicians in America, says, “We do everything except diagnose, prescribe and do surgery. They often work in private clinics and animal hospitals, assisting veterinarians with the care of animals” ("Veterinary Technologist and Technician"). Veterinary technicians, commonly known as veterinary technicians, provide care and comfort to sick or injured animals. They work with veterinarians or scientists in a way that is similar to the help a nurse gives to a doctor. While many clinics have a receptionist, but a vet tech may still have to talk on the phone with a client. At Ankeny Animal and Avian Clinic, they have a specific rule of three. If the receptionists are busy and the phone rings at least three times anyone nearby that is not busy is required to answer the phone. Mentioned in an interview at Heart of Ankeny Animal Hospital it is a daily occurrence that a vet tech will need to answer the phone, as many times the receptionist is busy taking a different phone call, talking with a customer or doing another task. If this happens a tech is expected to answer the phone and help the customer. A special task for a vet tech that was mentioned at Ankeny Veterinary Clinic is a vet tech is to call pet owners with results from tests. Part of a vet techs job is to run tests on any samples taken from the pets. These tests can often be done at the clinic under a microscope within a few hours to a few days. The tests that are sent out would be returned to the techs to view and draw final conclusions. The staff at Amherst Veterinary Hospital were very professional when speaking to their customers. I discovered that in order to be a vet you need strong communication skills and patience. In a serious work environment such as the vet office, customers may be stressed out because of their pet's health condition which is why it is important to deal with their issues in a calm matter. An example of this is when one of the cats has a mass removal done, the owner wanted the vet to call. After the procedure was completed, the vet waited an hour to call the owner because the cat was still asleep due to the medication still being in effect. Once the cat was awake, the vet phoned the owner. The owner began to shout at the vet because she didn't call…
