Animal Farm Book Cover Analysis

Animal Farm by George Orwell is a great story and has many intriguing and very interesting events, yet sadly the book cover is not exciting like the story. To deal with this problem, I created a new cover to emphasize the major symbols in the story. I also incorporated a quote into my cover to show the completion of human values taking over Napoleon. Napoleon is the main figure on the cover, being dressed in the uniform of Josef Stalin and carrying a whip to mistreat his fellow “equal” animals. The image of Napoleon symbolizes the allegory that George Orwell created between Josef Stalin and Napoleon, as they were both dictators in the totalitarian governments they created. I selected this image to show how Napoleon completely took over the human qualities that were thought to have left the farm with Jones, and how he
Jones’ shotgun which he used to fight the animals during the Battle of the Cowshed. The gun symbolizes the power that humans possess to kill and endanger one another and animals of all kinds. I selected this image to show how through Napoleon wanting to teach the animals how to use guns for defense, he is approving the animals to be more human-like, which Animalism was trying to reverse. The final symbolic, and very similar, images I drew were the symbol of the Soviet Union and the image on the flag in the Animal Farm. The symbol of the Soviet Union is made up of a star, hammer, and a sickle, which represent communism and the working class. The symbol on the flag of the Animal Farm is made up of a hoof and a horn, which represent all animals being equal and Animalism. I selected these images to add to Orwell’s allegory in how the Animal Farm and the Soviet Union are so similar, especially in how their governments were transformed into dictatorships through their paranoid leaders. Along with numerous images, I also incorporated an important quote into my cover where Orwell
