George Orwell’s Animal Farm … Led by the pigs, the animals overthrow the humans in order to end their misery and finally achieve true equality. They create a set of commandments called Animalism as a guide to govern Animal Farm. These commandments can be summarized by two main ideas: Man is the source of all evil and all animals are equal to one another. However, the gradual erosion of the animals’ rights from within their very ranks brings up doubt about whether true equality was achieved. Since the pigs are the most intelligent animals on the farm, they assume a leadership role. Jones is kicked out of the farm, it creates a hole that needs to be filled by a leader. Naturally the most intelligent animals, the pigs, assume this role and put themselves in a position of power. This is evidenced when the pigs take on the responsibility of turning Major’s speech into Animalism. The other animals in the farm automatically assume that the pigs are in charge, and put them in a leadership position. The pigs are also good at solving problems. They find creative ways to use equipment in the farm that were made for humans. The pigs deal with all of the issues that the regular animals cannot. Because of this, the animals start to think that the pigs are superior to them, creating a hierarchy and putting the pigs on top of it. After Snowball is kicked off of the farm the hierarchy increases even more. Napoleon is in charge of all of the decisions, making him the most powerful animal on the farm. He creates a raised platform towards the front of the room to show that the pigs were the leaders and had more power than the rest of the animals. He also has guard dogs protecting him and the other pigs so nobody thinks of questioning their motives or actions. The power thirsty pigs go to great lengths just to make sure that they are viewed as leaders, providing them with more power than the rest of the animals. This proves that true equality was never a realistic ideal for animal farm since the pigs inevitably rise to the top because of their intelligence and
