Throughout the novel “Animal Farm” Napoleon uses many ways to gain and maintain his power. He uses propaganda, lies and intimidates and manipulates the animals on the farm. But can he keep control of his power?
Napoleon uses many strategies to gain power on animal farm for eg. Using the dogs as his own army and scaring snowball of the farm. From the start of the Novel we see that he is trying to gain power by doubling the ration of corn every day and giving two biscuits to each dog just after Mr Jones was chased out of the farm by the animals. Napoleon also took the dogs at a young age to be taught various things for eg. Napoleon made a high pitched noise which the dogs responded to and then attacked snowball which they were taught to do, he also taught the dogs that napoleon was the best and snowball was the enemy, by doing this it made him much stronger and gave him more control.
Napoleon maintains a lot of his power through squealer by getting him to lie to the other animals on the farm and not tell them the truth that Jones in fact is a better leader than himself. When the extra milk was missing from the farm, everyone was wondering where it was, but it was napoleon who stole the extra milk and he blatantly lied to them and said “never mind the milk comrades” because he knew he stole the milk and wanted to get the topic off their minds . He told all the animals on the farm that it was snowball that stole the milk and that he snuck in the farm at night and took it. Napoleon lies to all the animals because he wants them to think that snowball is nothing but trouble and is the enemy. Another time when napoleon lies to the animals is when he told them that their lives are now better than in jones day, but they actually worker much harder and eat less.
