"A government that robs peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul" (George Bernard Shaw). Having power alone is impossible; leaders that have power must have people supporting them. Therefore, supporters is equal to power, and the way to gain power is to gain supporters then keep the ones you have. Napoleon, the dictator in Animal Farm, gained power by gaining support of the smarter animals such as the pigs and dogs. The pigs got away with more things that other animals would not because Napoleon was bribing them to be loyal. An example is when the pigs got to drink the milk and apples while the other animals could not (Orwell 19). Napoleon kept power by making sure the animals that supported him stayed, and the animals that did not support him were restricted. On page 56 some of the animals that did not support Napoleon were executed (Orwell). This allowed Napoleon to …show more content…
keep his supporters in power, and in return he stayed in power.
Similarly in Pakistan businesses and people are trying to get power.
Large businesses are gaining power by bribing judges ("Pakistan"). The judges are supporting the businesses allowing them to take more power. This is like Napoleon bribing other pigs so he can gain power. The government of Pakistan has restricted the citizens multiple times to ensure they keep power. When Zia-Ul-Haq instated martial law for 8 years ("Mohammad") the general was trying to keep his power by instating Martial law so the citizens could not impeach him. In Pakistan the leaders are clearly trying to gain power and keep it by persuading their
citizens.
"All propaganda has to be popular and has to accommodate itself to the comprehension of the least intelligent of those whom it seeks to reach"("QUOTES"). Leaders use the media and propaganda to persuade their citizens by installing a sense off hope. Hitler in Parallel Journeys promised that Germany would soon be the top country in the world filling the Hitler Youth with hope (Ayer 71). This helped Hitler become a leader because citizens of the world want to have hope in their leaders. For Germany to became a national power Hitler believed that he had to rid the country of Jews. In school German children were being taught hatred towards Jews, Gypsies, and other ethnic groups because Hitler believed they were not going to let Germany economically advance (Ayer 2). Hitler was using media and propaganda to his advantage by using the citizens hope, and their eagerness to progress so he could gain power.
In Pakistan Nawaz Sharif has recently became the Prime Minister again. He filled Pakistan citizens with hope as he promised a brighter future. Sharif promised to end drone strikes and improve the economy of Pakistan("Nawaz Sharif promises to improve economy, end drones strikes"). Also in Pakistan schools they are learning to hate Hindus because Pakistan, a mainly muslim country, and India, a mostly Hindu country, have had conflicts through History("Pakistan"). Leaders are corrupt because they are using the media to take advantage of their citizens, and making them believe what the government believes even if it is not morally correct.
Leaders get power by persuading their citizens into believing they can be the best choice. The quote said by Hitler, "All propaganda has to be popular and has to accommodate itself to the comprehension of the least intelligent of those whom it seeks to reach"("QUOTES"), also applies here because leaders are able to persuade citizens easily if they are not as intelligent and observant. An example is in Julius Caesar act iii. Brutus goes and speaks to the crowd persuading them to believe killing Julius Caesar was justified. Then Mark Antony, Caesars supporter, turned the crowd against Brutus easily (Shakespeare 48). Like a dog, the citizens always have loyalty to their leader, and do not pay close attention allowing the leaders to do what ever they want. We see this in Julius Caesar when the revered leader, Pompey, was killed by Caesar the crowd then turned, and supported Caesar. (Shakespeare 6). The citizens of Rome did not care who was in power they where loyal to them, allowing corrupt leaders to keep their power.
In Pakistan the citizens are being easily swayed by the same false promises offered to them by the leaders. Leaders are promising tremendous growth of their economies though the same results keep recurring (Burki). The citizens are being persuaded by policies just like the citizens in Caesar. The citizens of Pakistan also are too loyal to Nawaz Sharif. The power hungry leader has now been elected three times and after the first two the people have been unhappy with the results he produced. Pakistani citizens where upset with Sharif after his second term because he started nuclear testing, and promised to fix the judicial branch but never did (Hasan). The inattentive citizens still chose to elect him as leader. We see here that apathy of citizens in Pakistan is leading to the downfall of their country. The citizens need to be more observant to make sure democracy in their country works.
Leaders will do anything to stay in power, even if means that they are corrupt. An example is in Pakistan when the leader instated Martial Law to ensure he could not be taken out of power. Leaders first will persuade their citizens using propaganda, then they will do anything to keep power, eventually becoming corrupt. Swat Valley is a serene place known for its peaceful religious history, contrarily the government is untrustworthy and cold blooded.
