Animal Science: Personal Statement Of Purpose
Growing up on the outside of a small town, it was always hard to find kids to play with as a child. No children, besides my cousin, lived near me that I could go outside to play with and all of the friends I made in school lived further away which proved it difficult to make arrangements to get together. I suppose that is why I spent most of my time playing with my dog. Living on the outside of town had its drawbacks, but also contained hidden benefits that take time to come into the light. Spending the majority of my time playing with my dog has helped me come to the realization of my love for animals. This love and passion for animals is something that drove me to pursue a career in the field of animal science and to one day achieve my goal …show more content…

It all began when a was a little boy and all I wanted was a dog, for years I begged and begged, and still no dog. I felt as if I was incomplete without one, I had even written persuasive essays in school on why I should get a dog and waited and just hoped for it. Finally, when I was in 5th grade, I found a church ministry where we met once month and came up with ideas to raise money for the local rescue. During the meetings, we would also go for a walk, those who had animals would walk them. One time, somebody from the rescue came with one of the rescue dogs for the walk, which inspired me to go to the rescue and check it out.…

It was a relaxing day at home in the Helfman household. My mom was constantly jabbering on the phone, my dad’s eyes were glued to his computer working, and my brother was stuck to his bed and never got up. My brother, Danny had gotten into Syracuse University a few months earlier and he was ecstatic about the life he was going to make for himself. Danny and I got along well our whole lives, but we weren’t as close as some other siblings. This upset me because sometimes all I wanted to do was talk to my brother and get his advice. I have three dogs. My dogs Sadie, Tootsie, and Lucky are cuddly and soft toy poodles.…

I am the proud owner of a little brown dog named Bruno. I rescued him from the pound while I was in high school. The pound was unsure exactly what kind of dog Bruno was, but stated he is part Dachshund. I mentioned earlier, I rescued Bruno, but in reality he rescued me. My senior year of high school was not the greatest time for me, but owning Bruno got me through it. At the time, I just broke up with my high school “sweetheart” so to my immature young mind, I thought the world was coming to an end and I would never find someone else. Whether it was taking Bruno for walks, or trying to teach him new tricks he kept my mind occupied. I was given the responsibility to take care of him. I made sure he had all of his shots and there was fresh food and water for him. Until he was house broken, I was responsible to clean up after him. By being responsible for another being, it keeps a person centered not always thinking about themselves and their needs.…

“A dog is a man’s best friend”, is the expression people say when they find that during tough points in a person’s life an animal will always be there unconditionally to show comfort and support. The attachment that humans have with their pet is unquestionable, some people take their pets with them wherever they go, and even talk to their pets about what happened throughout the day or problems they are struggling with. Most animals are loyal to their owners and are always looking for attention, keeping their owners fit and exercised by going on walks or playing fetch or just going outside and getting fresh air. Therapists have thought of a way to bring that unconditional love, comfort, loyalty, and playfulness into the therapy room. Animal interactions during therapy sessions should be used because it increases overall health and happiness in the patient as well as secure a special bond between the client and the animal that will encourage and motivate them to come to therapy sessions.…

As the single child in a family with working parents, I spent the most time of my childhood living and hanging around with my dog. This experience might be one of the reasons that I am very compassionate to animals and sensitive to people’s needs. My voluntary work is in a welfare house called Alenah's home. I love working there because I like seeing the smile face of the children there – even some autism babies don’t smile facially, I believe they can feel the love when being caressed softly.…

What is it about the presence of a dog or the touch of its soft fur that allows people to feel at ease and comfortable enough to release their emotions? Animals, the vast majority being canines due to being domesticated and easily accessed and trained, have been used in hospitals, schools, prisons, and other settings for years in order to bring about a therapeutic change (Megan A. Souter & Michelle D. Miller, 2007). Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a type of therapy that uses trained animal interaction as a form of treatment to ameliorate an individuals physical, emotional, and social well-being. From a young age, I relished the time I spent with, or near, any animal. I used to sit outside and watch as birds and squirrels searched meticulously for food, then ran around chasing each other playfully in my backyard, wondering what their lives were like and how different, or similar, were their lives from mine? I would spend numerous hours teaching my dog tricks, and I wouldn’t give up without him completing the task, or at the very least, having made some progress in doing so. And every afternoon, during fourth and fifth grade, I read to my rabbits, bemuse my mother told me they adored stories; this, I later realized, played a large role in me becoming proficient in English in less than two years, and also in developing my love for books…

After graduating from Western Oregon University I will apply to a dental school to earn a dental degree. During my college career I will work hard to maintain a high grade point average just like I have in high school. My goal for high school was to get a 4.0 all through high school so that I could be the valedictorian. I was able to achieve this by doing my homework every night and studying tirelessly. While sitting in the waiting room of an emergency veterinary clinic, dressed only in blood-soaked pajamas, my innocent dream became a serious aspiration. The veterinarian spoke to my mother while I listened intently. Our dog lost his leg but he was alive and would recover. Next, she turned to me.
