Animal Wise Chapter 3 Summary

Chapter three of Animal Wise centers mostly around the well-known African gray parrot named Alex. Virginia Morell went to Pepperberg’s lab at Brandeis University in Massachusetts and observed Alex’s daily routines. Morell got to experience the model/rival technique, which Pepperberg used to teach labels to Alex. The technique in its simplest form would go as such: Alex would be perched between two people. The first person would hold up an item like wood and would ask the second person what it is. The second person would reply by saying “wood” in a drawn out singing-like manner.
