Ankle Biomechanics Summary
The article "Ankle Biomechanics during four landing techniques," written by Brian
P. Self and Daniel Paine is based on a study trying to reveal new ankle injury prevention during landings in a variety of sports. By performing a series of landing tests, the goal is to learn how to prevent ankle injuries in sports through knowledge and understanding of proper landing techniques. Four landing conditions from 30.48 cm in height were tested. The landings include: the natural landing where the participant could use whatever landing technique they would utilize during an actual sporting event, but they must remember to keep their arms above their head through the entire test; the stick it landing where the participant drops with minimal knee flexion,

specifically in the hip, the legs widened, away form the midline of the body ensuring an increase in stability and balance of the tackler. This action abduction of the legs in order to increase stability develops prior to contact. This way the tackler can prepare a stable stance in order to with-take maximal force whilst completing a successful tackle against the ball carrier running into contact with the tackler. Use diagrams and descriptions to explain two key biomechanics concepts and principles necessary for successful performance. For a successful and effective action of the rugby tackle, biomechanics concepts and principles are necessary to do so.…

Football players may encounter two possible injury scenarios for ankle syndesmotic injuries. One involves a direct blow to the lateral leg, causing internal rotation of the leg, while the foot remains fixed on the ground in relative external rotation. The second injury scenario involves a blow to the lateral knee, with the foot planted in external rotation and the body rotated internally. Both situations force a widening of the ankle mortise and rupture of the ligamentous structures responsible for stabilizing the distal syndesmotic articulation.…

Metrics measured included the ground contact time (GCT), knee flexion angle, foot strike, and stride cadence.4 Testing results revealed that barefoot runners had the smallest amount of rearfoot strikes (40%) when compared to shod runners (87%) and that GCT was the least with barefoot runners (250.6 ms).4 Last, the stride cadence was highest among barefoot runners. This data suggests that not only does barefoot running provide increased safety through mitigating the risk of injury due to rearfoot strikes and ground reaction force injuries, but it also increases the overall stride…

Football consists of a team of talented, skilled individuals that display strength, power and speed to play the game. Without these traits, a player will certainly be a failure to the game and the team. It is a very rough form of entertainment that we all love to watch with our families and friends. It is rather ironic that although we do not promote players to hurt each other; in the game of football, we seem to send the opposite message that it’s alright to get hurt, nonetheless, a sport where players understand that in order to stand out amongst other players, the harder they exert effort into the game also increases their risk of sustaining unpredictable injuries.…

In "What is the Safest Sprint Starting Position for American Football Players[,]” medical professionals Bruno Bonnechere, Benoit Beyer, Marcel Rooze and Jan Serge Van Sint, provide information on how starting sprint positions can affect American football players. Bonnechere et al. support their claims by collecting measurements of the head, trunk, and field-of-view of 2-, 3-, and 4-point positions using twenty-five young males Out of the twenty-five participants, thirteen were used as the control group. Their purpose is to demonstrate three different starting positions and deem which position is the safest. Additionally, the authors attempt to bring about awareness of concussions in the NFL and how a football player can prevent them from happening by choosing the safest sprint stance. This semester I am taking five other courses besides this one. One of my more interesting classes is Kinesiology 220, otherwise known as Introduction to Athletic Injuries. This class focuses on injury in sport and how to deal with it as an athlete, athletic trainer, coach, or physical therapist. We learn all about how injuries are onset, whether it be acute (a direct impact or action resulting in injury), or chronic (an ongoing action that slowly wears down a part of the body resulting in injury). We also discuss what types of injuries occur more in certain sports, or even because of what gender you are. For example, women are more prone to knee injuries such as ACL tears than men are. Studies have been done and while there is no set reason…

The subjects were three unskilled male adults varying in age approximately from 21 to 37 years, with an average mass of 72.3 +/- 13.0 kg and height of 1.81+/- 0.03 m. Warm up for a few minutes was instructed to the subjects prior to the jumps. Subjects jumped off a force platform on a verbal signal as far as possible (independent variable) six times each time with control variables being the usage of their arms and without using their arms (hand was held in front of abdomen). A 3-D passive motion captive system was used to with four cameras, passive reflective markers, a force platform and a computer software with a linear transform equations that transformed projections into 3-D position of each marker in space. The markers were applied to skin and shoe at all the main joints involved in the movement of standing long jump. The jumping distance was calculated by measuring the displacement of the toe marker from the initial position to the ending position. This developed a 2-D link model on the computer and the center of gravity and the distance was thus calculated along with the take off velocity (after disregarding the drag force) for comparisons between the two variables.…

Biomechanics is an increasingly well-known field of research, which takes a mechanical approach to the human body. As a combination between mechanics and biology, it can help increase our knowledge in orthopaedics and ergonomics, but also in other areas such as rehabilitation and sports [4, 5, 7]. An important sub-field of biomechanics is gait analysis which is the methodical measurement, description and evaluation of factors that affect human locomotion [1, 6]. The invention of the camera made it possible to investigate…

Their methods were to take a large number of people with an acute ankle sprain and see if there was a difference between a brace and other functional methods. This study showed that between the methods of treatment there was “no evidence” classified for a reoccurrence for an ankle sprain or injury. Also measured in this study were residual complaints associated with ankle injuries. Those three areas were pain, swelling, and stability. In all three areas, each of the five studies proved a “no evidence” for the effect of an…
