Rollo May state, “If you do not express your own original ideas, if you do not listen to your own being, you will have betrayed yourself” (Cashman 2008 p 113). I am a very optimistic person and I know that things will pass. I never dwell on the past but always look at it to brighten my present for myself and for others. I have learned to share what ever knowledge I have with others in hopes they will do the same with me. I have always believed that working with others and making sure you get to know people is important. Understanding other’s …show more content…
weaknesses and strengths is so important to know as a person and as a leader.
I know my goals and plans in life are full of so many possibilities for myself and others. I know when we set our goals to succeed we can achieve it. You cannot force individual to believe in your ideas, values, beliefs, as a leader you need to inspire this to them (Kouzes & Posner 2009, p 18). What I have always remembered is staying true to my experiences, my values, and my beliefs and that I will succeed within my organization, school and in my personal life. I know that nothing is impossible and we can do whatever we set our minds to do.
We need to know and understand that Interpersonal skills are really important; this skill will allow us to succeed in our job. Without this we may experience conflicts with others or cause us to hate coming to work each day. The good thing is that this does not have to be like this. What I have seen is that most conflicts are caused because people have different behavioral styles and approaches on how they each work. As leaders, we need to understand these different styles including our own style in order to make the relationships improve with others in our workplace.
Interpersonal mastery requires aware of changes in ones’ own conduct and arrogances when dealing with others, and it includes a skill to connect in such a way that new ideas can connect with and encourage others. I also see Interpersonal mastery as a way to build a stronger bond with others. Having a stronger bond can inspire energy, vision, and influence. When there is a bond, we create and endure relationships. A good leader will not have a hard time creating a bond with others, but it does take work to maintain. Relationships must be inspired, encouraged, achieved, shaped, and restored. Anyone can take the lead in increasing the efficiency of their relationships.
A leader with interpersonal mastery understands the value of their relationships and the bonds that helps to know each other in a way that can knock out personal differences and hard feelings. Relationships can and will create power. When we create power we will work as a team and not individually to achieve our mission and goals for ourselves and the organization. In addition to the items above, the following interpersonal skills are important in order to work effectively with other people. Cashman’s interpersonal mastery talks about the importance of building relationships with people. According to a study conducted by the Foundation for Future Leadership, most middle and upper managers found their highest evaluations were received for their intellect and technical expertise and lowest evaluations were received for their interpersonal skills.
We can see that there are several personal benefits that can be obtained by a person with strong interpersonal skills. Some of these skills are highly valued in the workplace and the individual who possesses them will be seen to add great value. Additionally we can see career opportunities open up as a result. Possessing strong interpersonal skills is a strong predictor for career success. When we manage, or lead other people, it is especially critical to gain the Interpersonal leadership skills we need.
Kevin Cashman (2008) state, “Interpersonal Mastery is about balancing our courageous influence, our voice, with human connection” (p 143).
This can be a challenge and difficulty thing for a leader or individuals to face. A leader need to develop great listen skills, so they can listen closely to their team members, build an open communication, and establish credibility. Doing this leaders will gain the trust of their team, co-workers and customers and will be able to influence for them to give more to their work. A leader should demonstrate their authentic influence in order to influence others to trust you as a …show more content…
leader.
Anne Morrow Lindbergh, states, “When on is a stranger to oneself, then one is a stranger to oneself, then one is estranger from others, too” (Cashman 2008, p 166).
As a leader, it is important not to lose touch with our feelings, because if we lose touch of this we will not be able to connect with others and this can cause leader to run into conflict with their team. As a leader, we need to be aware of ourselves so we are aware of our team and surroundings. Effective communication can construct the leader’s credibility and increase employee’s commitment and loyalty to the leader and the organization. These are challenges that as leaders we will need to know in order to build a sold relationship with our followers. We should be learning to listen to others and obtain feedback and taking their feedback to improve our
self-awareness.
Jay Conger (1998) state, “Effective persuasion becomes a negotiating and learning process through which a persuader leads colleagues to a problem’s shared solution” (p 35). I think all leaders will encounter conflicts and issue, but an authentic leader will find ways to overcome and find solution together with our team. As a leader, the challenge will be to convince others to see things or do things to achieve the same goal.
