Annemarie relationship with her mom and dad is normal. She is a good kid and she does not argue or talk back to her parents. Annemarie loves them so much. She knows that they will do all they can to keep her safe. They will do anything for her and she will do anything for them. For instance, when mamma had broken her ankle, she helped her and took the handkerchief to Uncle Henrik like she said to do. (Lowry page 102-105) Peter and Annemarie’s relationship feels as if he is her older brother. They are so close because Peter was Annemarie’s older sister, Lisa, fiancee. Uncle Henrik helped Annemarie become brave in situations that she would have never thought to be brave in. Once the lies started, Annemarie did not know who to trust. For example, when great Aunt Birte had “died”. She knew that they did not have a relative of that name. Annemarie’s experience from girlhood to womanhood is interesting. Her being a kid and becoming mature happens very fast throughout the book. One minute she is going to school and playing with friends (Lowry page 1 and 2). The next she is taking very important things that are life threatening to help people out.
