Annemarie Lies
Throughout the story Annemarie is lied to by her family and friends. Annemarie soon figures out that she is being lied to numerous of times. She does not like to be lied to but she starts to understand why. The lies that affected the truth on her story, her relationship to the adults in her life, and her journey from girlhood to womanhood.
The lies and truth of Annemarie’s story. Annemarie is lied to about the casket that has great Aunt Birte in it. She soon realizes that it is a lie because no one called to tell the family and she has never heard a relative of that name. “Annemarie said nothing, she was confused. Annemarie relationship with her mom and dad is normal. She is a good kid and she does not argue or talk back to her parents. Annemarie loves them so much. She knows that they will do all they can to keep her safe. They will do anything for her and she will do anything for them. For instance, when mamma had broken her ankle, she helped her and took the handkerchief to Uncle Henrik like she said to do. (Lowry page 102-105) Peter and Annemarie’s relationship feels as if he is her older brother. They are so close because Peter was Annemarie’s older sister, Lisa, fiancee. Uncle Henrik helped Annemarie become brave in situations that she would have never thought to be brave in. Once the lies started, Annemarie did not know who to trust. For example, when great Aunt Birte had “died”. She knew that they did not have a relative of that name. Annemarie’s experience from girlhood to womanhood is interesting. Her being a kid and becoming mature happens very fast throughout the book. One minute she is going to school and playing with friends (Lowry page 1 and 2). The next she is taking very important things that are life threatening to help people out. She never really gets to experience being a kid after she was stopped by the German soldiers for running on the residential
