In Annie Leonard’s video “The Story Of Bottled Water,” one of the main reasons bottled water must be stopped is that bottled water is less quality and less regulated than tap water (1). She addresses
the fact that Cleveland did tests finding out that bottled water losses in quality and taste tests (1). She also goes a step further saying “In taste tests all across the country, people consistently choose tap over bottled water.” She also supports herself by asking the audience “Who would demand a less sustainable, less tasty, way more expensive product?” Tap water cost almost nothing, despite that we still continue to buy bottled water (1). She also talks about how we are convinced to buying bottled water in the first place, it's a tactic called manufacturing demand. (2) Which works by scaring, misleading and seducing the customer into using bottled water instead of tap water.
When it comes to cost Annie Leonard strongly states that bottled water is more expensive than tap water (1). Tap water is almost free and one bottle of FIJI water is about two dollars, which makes bottled water thousands of times more expensive than tap water. Even though the price of bottled water is so much more expensive than tap, every week Americans buy around half a billion bottles weekly (1 ).
Annie Leonard explains the harmful effect of bottled water on the environment (4). Bottled water has always been hurting the environment and demolishing it. Annie Leonard brings up a Nestle ad that stated “Bottled water is the most environmentally responsible consumer product in the world” which is a fully ignorant statement. She explains that the pollutions caused come all the way from the production beginnings because oil is essential in the process (4). She says “Each year making the plastic water bottles used in the US takes enough oil and energy to fuel a million cars” (4). Leonard also talks about the shipping process. She states that the shipping of the bottles around the world causes harm to the environment as well, and after all that we continue to drink our water bottles so quickly. She explains that disposal is one of the main issues because they cannot be fully recycled into new bottles. To dispose of the bottles they would be shipped halfway across the world to India to be thrown out (5). Most will be filled in landfills in the ground, and others will be burned in incinerators realising some of the worst toxic air polluting gases. After all, Annie Leonard insists stopping bottled water as the main drinking source will only make our planet less polluted and safer (6). The way we avoid bottled water is not purchasing or supporting it unless there is no other option. Investing in public water is one of the solutions Annie Leonard advises us to take. She explains that with all the money spent on bottled water, we can use to fix pollution we would be on the right track. She also ends on a high note saying that bottled water prices are already plummeting (7).
