"The U.S. public goes through about 50 billion water bottles a year, and most of those plastic bottles are not recycled" (Karlstrom, Solvie, and Christine Dell'Amore). Bottled water is harming our environment in many ways. Small things such as transporting these bottles set off fossil fuels which pollutes the air. This could have a huge impact on our environment in the long run. Tap water is more efficient and healthier for our environment, instead of bottled water.
Bottled water is said to be safer and more purified, but in many cases that is not true. First, it is not mandatory for bottled water companies to test for certain bacteria found in the water. They can violate rules and still sell the water. This puts people at risk of getting sick due to lack of water testing. Next, "bottled water companies use free plastic, but laced into the plastic are other chemicals that can seep out" (Peppard). Not only is plastic bad for the environment, it is also considered as a safety hazard. At last, "American Water Works Association showed that tap water is less than 1/300 the cost of bottled water" (Business Insider). Bottled water can cost from around $.80 to $4.00 per gallon.
