I am assuming Annik from the above situation hasn’t had any experience in brushing her hair and that she is right handed.
Prompting is used to increase the probability of individual’s chances of doing certain behaviour at the appropriate time and in the right situation. The several methods of prompting can be divided into the response prompts and stimulus prompts categories. Response prompts involve some sort of action from someone else other than the individual trying to engage in the behaviour. Stimulus prompting involves altering the …show more content…
Prompting Strategy: Annik is autistic and as well has a severe visual impairment; taking this into account I chose a ‘physical prompt’ (physical guidance) to prompt motor behaviour while verbally requesting, “Brush your hair Annik”. In this situation a full physical prompt – in which Annik’s movements are guided completely by the therapist using ‘hand over hand’ prompting technique would likely increase the probability the behaviour would occur and I felt would be most appropriate for her. Other techniques such as modelling, gesturing, positioning and environmental would be inappropriate due to her sight. Verbal in this situation, although least intrusive would be cumbersome, as she has no idea how to use a brush. (please see assumption I made above) Using only verbal would require, “Brushing your hair” to be broken into several time consuming steps. I wanted to use the least amount of prompting necessary to get the job done in order to avoid having Annik becoming, “prompt-dependent.”
Procedure:
- Annik will stand directly in front of a flat surface (table, dresser, bathroom counter closely approximating where she would normally brush her hair) upon which her brush is
