Laura's Iep Case Study
Rationale

Laura’s IEP team constructed four following goals and objectives:
1) Communication: During small groups and meal times, Laura will use 1-2 word utterances, spoken and/or signed for a variety of intents (i.e. to request, deny, label, comment, state wants/needs, and share past experiences) with peers/adults in the classroom.
2) Communication: During small group and learning center times, Laura will increase overall intelligibility with peers/adults by producing age-appropriate speech sounds / p, b, k, g/ in the initial and final positions of single words.

Currently, Laura’s baseline is having her keep her hearing aids in and not removing them. We are working on her getting comfortable with having a new hearing device in all areas of her life. We have found that if she isn’t concern about her hearing aids and just focus on listen, she is quick to identify, respond, and/or imitate the sound. It is important to start off on the right foot with prospective families. I answer any questions they have and I explain the highlights of the program. I either mail or give them a copy of the parent’s handbook. When a child is enrolled in the program I have the parent complete all the necessary paperwork such as; medical and emergency contact forms. I tell the parent the arrival and departure time and when the fees are due. I make sure the child’s name is on their cubby and the sign in sheet the first day of school. I also let the parent know they can stay with the child the first day if they want to.…

Providing Time and Supporting OpportunitiesCircle Time allows children to build listening and attention skills and allows a set time period were children can communicate. This strategy is to provide supported communication, allowing children to talk about their interests. It also facilitates communication between the children and their peers. By asking open-ended questions we can encourage communication. By placing a child with speech, language and communication needs at the end, the child can listen to the others and know what is expected of them when it’s their turn.…

The amount and style of adult talk can greatly influence the environment and how accessible it is to children with speech, language or communication needs. Giving children time to process and understand information, and to respond is crucial. By adapting their use of talk in the setting and in particular their level of language, adults can really enhance their learning development as well as supporting their communication skills. Adults can support this through a number of ways.…

Communication is constantly happening within the day care centre and in my job role I have a responsibility to communicate with staff, service users and other professionals. I use various forms of communication but I also seek to make sure that it is understood. Communication has got to be understood before it can be effective and so I try to ensure comprehension when I am verbally speaking by getting staff to repeat what I have asked them to do. I also write simply worded memos and emails to ensure ease of comprehension. When communicating with other professionals I speak clearly and seek affirmation when organising meetings or planning events. I also seek to write in a legible manner if writing to professionals. Each service user has a communication book for reporting and informing families and carers of activities on a daily basis, these are written in a legible way also. Primarily when communicating with each individual service user I seek to communicate in an understandable way and at a level each individual will understand. The methods I employ are verbal, pictorial, object-based, physical prompts and signing.…

One of my goals in the functional area of guidance is provide a supportive environment in which children begin to learn and practice appropriate behavior as individuals and in groups. In the program I want children to be independent and make positive choices. I help them do this by offering children several choices throughout the day. I work as a mediator, not a problem solver. Children in my care are informed, and have the practice needed to be independent and make good decisions. Children need guidance from the time they are born.…

According to the U.S. Department of Education (2007), an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is a written plan that is created for a student who has a documented disability and requires specific special education services. Each IEP must be designed to suit the individual child’s needs in order to provide them with free and appropriate public education. Competency Goal Four: To establish positive and productive relationships with families. As an early childhood educator, I have to maintain a positive and productive relationship with the families that come into my preschool. Parents entrust me with their children all day and, I make the parents and families feel as much a part of our classroom and a part of their child’s development. To create this relationship, I work to build an open, friendly and cooperative relationship with each of the children’s family. I make sure to let my families know about my open door policy where they can come into the classroom and stay for a short period of time. A great way to get families involved is to have a volunteer sign up for each of our event at school. I find this is a great way to get my parents involved in the school to help out.…

At this time I have not personally developed an IEP; however, I have implemented the accommodations and modification under the supervision of special education teacher instruction for example, redirecting a student’s attention when the student is off task, getting eye contact before giving directions, repeating to the student so they can better understand what is expected of them, simplifying directions for them into short phrases also demonstrating the task before proceeding with the work, providing verbal praise when the student complies with the directions, does a good job, completes work, when given a test allowing the student as much time as need to finish the test, braking down task into manageable units such as reducing written task. All this modification and accommodation we place in order to help and follow the IEP requirements for each student. I think all that I learned on Friday, about IEP’s is going…

***Commentary: The purpose of this section is to give students several ways to figure out exactly what they should do with their mouths to make the sounds in question since this is the first barrier to proper production. Students can try to match the description, they can watch me and try to do what I do, or they can try to replicate the sound they hear, depending on what works for them. Hearing the sounds repeated in isolation will also help them hear the sounds in context.…
