The flash floods carried with them rocks, abrasive sand along with the other debris that came along with the torrents. These floods over millennia carved and sculpted the soft sandstones to give birth to the famous canyons of the world. The Antelope Canyon was also formed by the erosion of the Navajo Sandstone by similar flash floods and sub-aerial processes. The deep fissures of the canyon at places are very steep and measure up to several hundred meters.

For camping and hiking at the Antelope Canyon, permits are extremely important and necessary. Camping can also be done at Lake Powell. One can get a great view of the lake from the shore. Camping on the shores of Lake Powell and NRA is free of cost. There are three campgrounds on the Glen Canyon NRA. Through camping at the different sites of the canyon, the tourists get a wonderful opportunity to have a view of the brilliant shades of the sandstone from the early hours of the morning and the changing colors throughout the day.
