Questions
What Objective measures could we use to test the hypothesis about the cleansing power of antibacterial soap? Rithika: We can test our hypothesis on the cleansing power of antibacterial soap by using both petri dishes and testing the amount of bacteria on our hand before and after using the soap. We will be able to calculate the amount of colonies of bacteria by using the petri dishes.
Calculated the difference between both samples will help us to see whether the antibacterial soap will really help us to defeat more bacteria than the regular soap. If the hypothesis is correct, what would you predict the outcome of the test to be? Rithika: I predict that the outcome of the test will be that the regular soap will bring a …show more content…
The antibacterial soap is made to help us eliminate as much bacteria on our hands as we can and this test will be able to prove the fact that more colonies of bacteria exist on our hands after using regular soap, then after using antibacterial soap. To test this hypothesis, we could simply survey everyone in lab regarding his or her use of soap. Presumably, at least some of the class almost always uses antibacterial hand soap and some almost never use this type of soap. After we found these two classes of people, we could simply compare the number of bacteria found on their hands. Why is this a poor test of the hypothesis? Rithika: This would be a poor test of our hypothesis because there are no specific controls for the experiment. The experiment is not of a proper sample size and the students have different body types and have all been to different places throughout the day. They all also use different types of regular and antibacterial soap. A proper experiment should always be controlled in order for it to come our most …show more content…
Set out both petri dishes and hand soap bottles. Label both petri dishes accordingly.
2. Make sure to lightly wet the area being swabbed (in this case it would be the center of each palm). 3.Swab both hands (left and right) in the center of the palm and place both samples in each half of each petri dish.
4. Immediately close the petri dishes to prevent any other source of bacteria from touching the dish. 5. Adjust water taps to make sure both are at room temperature.
6. Place two drops of each soap, regular and antibacterial, in the center of the palm on each hand and place both hands, consecutively, under each tap.
7. Have two other students thoroughly wash each hand for 30 seconds(at the same time).
8. For the hand wash, rub outer and inner hands repeatedly and make sure to wash in between the student’s fingers.
9. Immediately after the wash, swab both hands, without drying, and place both samples in the second half of each petri dish
10. Close the petri dish immediately, again, to avoid any other sources of bacteria.
11. Place both dishes in the Incubator and make sure to leave them close to one
