The Multiple Choice Section
This section can be extremely challenging. Each question has 5 possible responses. The raw score for this section is figured by adding one point for each correct answer and subtracting 1/4 point for each one that is answered incorrectly. The incorrect answers are called distractors, and some of them will seem like they could be right. But there is always only one correct answer, and if you fill in more than one oval for a particular question on your response sheet, you will have that response marked as incorrect.
Questions left blank do not add or subtract points from the raw score. Therefore, if you left them all blank, you would get a 0 on this section. If you answered 60 correctly and 20 incorrectly, you would receive a score of 55 on this section. It is important to note that the number of your raw score has no correspondence to the usual number/percent/letter grade you normally get in school. Getting a raw score of 55 would be pretty good, in fact.
General Advice
Underline or circle key terms - Pay attention to qualifier - There are no tricks--the questions get at major themes, events
Quotations: You are given a quote and asked to identify the author of the quote. Chances are pretty good that you will not recognize the actual quote, so you will have to use some detective skills to get these questions right. Look for a key phrase in the quote to help you figure it out. Try to find phrases such as "tyrant," or "fine arts" to help you figure it out. "Tyrant" should lead you to think of, say Napoleon. "Fine arts" should bring to mind the Renaissance or some other key artistic movement. Make sure you READ THE WHOLE QUOTE before reading the responses!
Map questions: You are given a map with borders indicated, but no countries are labeled. Read the title of the map, if there is one. Don't look too carefully at the details of the map until you have read the question and th dates--you may be able to eliminate some "distractors"
