Aplastic Anemia Personal Statement
In early 2013 I had been sick almost every day for two months, and decided to go to Bellevue Hospital for a physical exam. That evening I was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, and a low chance of survival. It occurs when the bone marrow stops making a sufficient amount of healthy blood cells. As I went through the treatments I kept learning about the lab results and found out about the field of clinical laboratory science. I quickly became fascinated about the profession. The more I learned about it, the more I felt drawn to pursuing a career in clinical laboratory science. It took two years to get my aplastic anemia under control, and soon after I learned that York College offers a degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, and is nationally accredited. I was, and still am, grateful to York College for providing the major which I have been passionate about. I hope to become a clinical …show more content…
Almost 70% of medical decisions are based on lab results. Therefore, when I graduate and work in a hospital, I will be a great help to the healthcare team and the community. After graduation, my plan is to take the NYS and American Society for Clinical Pathology licensure exams. My family has helped me tremendously and made many sacrifices to allow me to focus on my education. I now have an opportunity to become the first college graduate in my family. Currently, I am finishing internship training in order to qualify for national licensure exam. The internship is five days a week for two semesters, thus I am unable to work more hours to save money for the tuition fee. After overcoming many obstacles, now I genuinely need the Senior Assist Fund to pay the tuition fee so I can continue my education, and be able to help the community as a clinical laboratory

As a medical laboratory technologist, my role is not limited to performing lab tests. I correlate the results obtained with patient's symptoms, clinical presentation, and other lab results. This introductory correlation of results peaked my curiosity to learn more about patient care. My intimate knowledge in this area will be a crucial asset to me as a…

I am really thankful for the generous award letter, but I still can not afford to attend University. On the award letter sent to me on June 22, 2007, it suggested that my parents should take a $9500 Federal Plus Loan. My parents have $480,000 mortgages that they are struggling to pay—they pay $2,710.53 for the first mortgage and $1,188.08 for the second mortgage (monthly). Yet, they make only $4200 from their jobs. They also need pay for utilities and foods—they are scrambling every dollar to pay these bills. Therefore, I can not see myself asking my parents to take another loan on my behalf. My family simply can not financially support my college education.…

As a child growing up I think I always wanted to work in the medical field, seeing my mother as a LPN. I also have always had a natural interest in the medical field because I like to watch a lot of ER and hospital shows. At first I didn’t really know what health career I wanted to pursue. I just knew that I liked being in the healthcare class and learning about the different health science careers and what they do. I think a medical office administration assistant would be a very good career for me because I am very helpful and can always be counted on when people need me. This is not my only career choice, it’s just the first I want to pursue. One year after graduation I will hopefully have my medical assisting certificate or at least be working on getting it. Around my five year mark I want to try to get a degree from a nursing school and become licensed as a registered nurse. After that I will try to specialize in pediatrics, so I can be a pediatric nurse. In ten years, I want to get my nurse practitioners license, so that I could work directly with a pediatrician.…

It almost feels like a chapter of Sherlock Holmes, where I can not only solve diagnostic mysteries but can also master the art of attention to detail and enlighten my patients with valuable knowledge. It amazes me how learning opportunities in Internal Medicine are endless, and with each rising day I might witness a new diagnostic challenge. My curiosity and characteristic vigilance have landed me with opportunities such as Vice-President of Global Affairs in Interact Club, Student Director of residence activities at my college, and researching and presenting various topics throughout my medical school career. These experiences allowed me to hone my leadership skills, ability to perform meticulous research, and planning while being keenly observant. I believe that Internal Medicine offers an intellectual platform where I can further master these traits and see a diverse range of patients, encompassing all the organ systems.…

The medical field is a career path that brings about many options and opportunities of great value. The noble idea of being a doctor tends to cloud the diligent studying and precise training that is actually required for this career. I have wanted to become a doctor since a very young age, and now that the opportunity is here for the taking, I have fully researched what it takes to succeed in this profession and various specialties of the practice. The road to a medical degree is one filled with thousands of notes, years of schooling, and many stressful nights, but the reward is one incomparable to any other. Saving people’s lives on a day-to-day basis has been one of my dreams for as long as I can remember, so the rigorous curriculum and the competitive medical schooling is a fair trade for the lives I can save. Earning a medical degree comes along with demanding schooling, disciplined studying, and meticulous training, but in the end the degree is worth all the sacrifices.…
