1. What were the challenges that Appex CEO Shikhar Ghosh faced when he joined Appex?
Mr. Ghosh faced a very chaotic situation when employees don’t know the roll in the company, poor planning, no accountability and hierarchic. Why “structure and control” were deemed necessary?
Structure and control are one of the basic and more important function for a company. In this case you see the lack of control when employees supposed to show to work at 8:00 A.M. and shows at 10:00 A.M. creating problems with schedule and customer service. In structure employees don’t know what was the specific function in the company they did what they feel to do that day, going back to control issued. One of the costumers shows at 8:00 A.M. and the employees show at 10:00 A.M. and their response what we lose that account. They don’t know the chain of command and to who to ask for help.
2. Evaluate each of the following structural changes Ghosh implemented with respect to importance, problems resolved, and problems created: (a) start-up, (2) circular, (3) functional, (4) teams, and (5) divisional.
Mr. Ghosh implement the circular structure this one expand from the center to the outside from executives to workers, this doesn’t work because the company have no knowledge in what is working in a structure. His second attempt tried horizontal structure this one don’t work for example the vice president of marketing call for a meeting and no one shows up because they don’t know their roles. At the end he start with the traditional vertical hierarchy for teach everybody how business are conduct in an organized environment. In February 1989 he created a functional hierarchy/ structure, this groups was organize in sales and marketing team, software developed team, service team, engineer and technology, operation team, financial team, human resource team, and administrative team.
3. What would you have done differently? Why?
I believe that Mr. Ghosh did a good job starting from scratch, but
