Lab 2: Application of the Top-Down Network Design Methodology
Lab Report
1. What are the business goals? (10 points)
The business goals of this project are to upgrade the current network while keeping cost reasonable. The changes are being made to accommodate for students with laptops/ wireless devices and students who take on-line courses.
2. What are the business constraints? (10 points)
One business constraint is cost. Funding for the project is mainly revenues from taxes. Another is the fact that they plan on opening a new campus in the future. This means that they need to account for scalability. 3. What are the technical goals? (10 points)
The technical goal of the project is to centralize all servers and equipment to the IT wing. Also, they would like to minimize the current number of servers in order to provide a more effective layout.
Updates to the network include installing wireless access points so that the wireless network can be accessed from anywhere on campus and outside areas. 4. What are the technical constraints? (10 points)
Some technical constraints include making a wiring scheme that connects everything to the IT wing. Also providing proper security for the wireless network (especially with outdoor access points).
5. Diagram the existing network. (10 points)
6. Describe the existing network traffic. (10 points)
Currently there is terminal-server traffic from the administration building. There are usually 37 users logged into each server. As far as the wireless access points, there are usually about 42 students logged in at a time.
7. Complete this table for all of the applications that currently run over the network. (10 points)
