APUSH Ms.Shaugnessey After the colonies of America advanced and the nation changed, some political changes were made as well. Political parties were put in place, one was the Federalists and the other was the Jeffersonian Republicans. The parties were used in the presidency of Madison and Jefferson in 1801 to 1817.Both of these presidents performed and put in actions that contradicted their values. They were supposed to be strict interpreters of the constitution which is word for word interpretation .If it was not written in the constitution you weren’t supposed to do it. Throughout their presidency they did actions that were more towards the Federalist Party which were loose interpreters and they didn’t take literal meaning of the constitution it was more of what was implied. Jefferson did the Louisiana Purchase which was a federalist action because it doesn’t say in the constitution that you can buy or sell land. Madison vetoed the bill dealing with internal improvements, but they imposed tarrifs. Also by Jefferson imposing the embargo and saying in his letter to Samuel Kercahval that says that laws should go hand and hand with human minds, it is going against the strict interpretation beliefs.
To begin with, Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase. Napoleon offered the entire Louisiana area for fifteen- million dollars. Although it doubled the size of the United States he faced problems between choosing what was more vital strict interpretation or the betterment of his country. In Thomas Jefferson’s letter to Samuel Kerceval he says that even though he is not one for the altering of the constitution, but that some laws should be changed due to progression of new discoveries and new truths disclosed .It should change as the future of the nation change (Document G).The
