There are few theories that are used. Some of the most common theories were brought out by evolutionary psychologists. Evolutionary psychologist may suggest that arachnophobia is based on a survival technique from our ancestors. Since most of the spider species are very venomous, although most of them do not even pose a threat to humans, the fear of spider will mostly make humans survive and even reproduce more. Arachnophobia can be treated most of the time with therapy; one in particular is the cognitive behavioral technique. The cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on stopping the negative automatic thoughts that are associated with the feared object or situation, replacing them with more rational thoughts instead. Some of the techniques may include cognitive reframing and systematic desensitization. Some of the newer research found has shown that virtual reality therapy, in which sufferer may be exposed to the virtual representation of spiders, this may even work better that the older technique of gradually exposing the client to live spiders later in their life. There are some cases, were antidepressant or even anti-anxiety medications could be used to treat arachnophobia. The second phobia that I will be talking about is Cynophobia.
