Why do deodorants with a greater amount of aluminum cause a more serious threat than ones with a smaller amount?
Hypotheses
The aluminum content in each of the deodorants will vary where the deodorants Axe and Citymen contain more aluminum then Nivea. By using Nivea, in the long term a person will be safer due to lower amounts of aluminum being present in their system.
Based on previously conducted researches, a person will always have some exposure to levels of aluminum by breathing air, eating food, and even drinking water. With an already low concentration of aluminum in our system …show more content…
An increase in the level of aluminum in the body by deodorants will not result in any serious threats due to it being too diminutive.
Study Design
In this experiment, the dependent variable is the amount of aluminum (Al) present, since it’s the element that is going to be measured.
The independent variable is the titrant; zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) solution which will be prepared by dissolving ZnSO4 in distilled water.
The materials that will be used in the following experiment include:
• Sixteen volumetric flasks
• Zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) solution
• Axe deodorant solution
• Nivea deodorant solution
• Citymen deodorant solution
• Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) …show more content…
Preparing the zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) solution by dissolving the solid form of ZnSO4 in 250ml of distilled water.
2. Determining the right concentration for ZnSO4 by calculating its mass.
3. Determining the right concentration of EDTA by dissolving it in 250ml of distilled water.
4. Preparing ammonium acetate by mixing equal amounts of ammonia and Ethanoic acid being 0.100 moldm-3 .
5. Buffering the pH using ammonium acetate to 4-5 for the greatest EDTA-complex.
6. Dissolving the concentrated deodorant solution (10 ml) in distilled water (90ml) to form a 100 ml deodorant solution.
7. Adding 20 ml of the EDTA solution to the deodorant solution.
8. Stirring the EDTA solution in the deodorant solution.
9. Adding 20 ml of ammonium acetate Ethanoic acid to the deodorant solution.
10. Stirring the ammonium acetate Ethanoic acid in the deodorant solution.
11. Dissolving the indicator Dihitizone in 20 ml of the alcohol, Euro-red, using a spatula tip.
12. Adding the indicator, Dihitizone, to the deodorant solution.
13. Stirring the deodorant solution while it is being titrated with zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) using a magnetic stirrer and a stirring magnet.
14. Adding a larger amount of zinc sulphate depending on the content of the
