Requiring students to conform to a dress code and uniforms is absurd and unnecessary. School uniforms and dress codes hinder a student's’ freedom of expression and promotes conformity over individuality. When a student has to conform to a dress code, they can’t wear clothes that they want to wear. Dress codes and uniforms tell you what type of clothing you can wear, what colors, and how long the clothing has to be. So, everyone looks the same and can’t wear what they want everyone to see them in for 5 days a week 7 hours a day.
To explain more, most students oppose school uniforms and dress codes and studies have shown that the uniforms can have a damaging effect on a student’s self image. A former Superintendent of schools in Oxford, NC, Tom Houlihan, stated that school uniforms “are a distraction from focusing on systematic and fundamental transformation to improve our schools.” (Tom Houlihan). The school staff and people outside the schools that run them focus so much on what we wear that they often look past problems within the school that are more important than how we dress.
In conclusion, requiring students to conform to a dress code is absurd to the school experience because it is unnecessary and has a negative impact on the students. A dress code and school uniforms are required in a lot of schools because studies have shown that they improve test scores and attendance, but studies have also found that they have long lasting negative impacts on students that proceed to not just schools, but outside of school and after the student finish
