Footballers in the premier league receive huge amounts of money every year with the likes of Wayne Rooney getting £17.09 million every year, but are they overpaid?
One way that we can tell if footballers are overpaid is by seeing how much revenue that a certain footballer will bring to a club. One way we can find this out is by looking at Sergio Aguero. Sergio Aguero is paid £16.6 million a year and at the end of last season, he scored a goal in the last minute of the last match which helped his club, Manchester City, secure the Premier League title. We can clearly see that he made a huge impact at the club and that the title winnings that Manchester city got were down to him. Manchester City got paid £10 million for winning the premier league, so in this case, Aguero is overpaid as they pay him £16.6 million a year and he brought in £10 million to the club. And since the £10 million was brought in by key players other than him as well, he is defiantly overpaid. Even with the shirt sales for the whole club (which is an average of £1.4 million per year since Aguero joined) he will still be considered overpaid.
Another way of looking at it is by calculating the total revenue that the Premier League makes then dividing it between all the players. By doing this, we can find an average value that a premier league player should be getting in a year. In a year, the premier league gets a total of £2.13 billion. There are 300 players in the teams in the premier league (each team has 25 and there are 20 teams). If you divide the total revenue by the number of players, you see that each premier league player should be earning £7.1 million every year. If you look at the actual statistics for how much each player earns on average, it is £1.2 million every year. This means that players should earn 7 times more than they do in the premier league and all this excess money is going to the owners
