Are Gender Stereotypes And Reconstructs Gender Identity?
Fashion has the ability to express gender identity, social status and style, thus, it is very difficult to know how fashion constructs and deconstructs gender identities. Traditionally, apparels and colours over the decades have identified gender. Gender identity can be both physiological and physical and can determent sexual definition. Masculinity and femininity historically have been extremely categorised; clothes and colours were divided into gendered categories. Writers such as Dianna Crane and Judith Butler agree that gendered identity through clothing, as a phenomenon for the 20th Century reached its highest point after the World War II. The advertisement portrayed a woman in a scene with men, with a sexual inference that was interpreted as male domination, with the women as an inferior subject. Dolce & Gabbana choose to use Size 0 models for their advertisements. This supports a false definition of beauty. Their advertisements use sex with artistic representations to grab the viewer’s attention (Illustration 1). The advert kept with the prevailing theme of women portrayed as inferior subjects, often, as in during the 1950’s they were shown in the kitchen, or performing to the significant requirement of the man for service and assistance, had been one of the major subjects of advertisement across most industries since the Industrial Revolution. Bordo (1993) and Mears (2009) claimed that women’s beauty is the basis of advertising across many industries. This is reinforced even today as Creative Directors at fashion brands often hire models for advertisements based on their looks, weight, or sometimes even the colour of the skin, and often they have a certain criteria to narrow down their selection

    Women were overrepresented in advertisements for cosmetics and were less likely to appear in advertisements for cars, trucks and related products. Seventy-five percent of all advertisements using women were for products found in the kitchen or bathroom, reinforcing the stereotype that a woman’s place is in the home. Women as compared to men were portrayed mostly in house settings rather than business settings. Women did not make important decisions and lastly women were depicted as dependent on men and were regarded primarily as sexual objects. Courtney and Whipple (1974) defined sexual objects as, where women had no role in the commercial, but appeared as an item of decoration. Jake Lake and Brad Wadden say, in the portrayal of women in the media that advertisements promote extreme thinness or a thin waist and big breasts, misleading because these models don’t represent the majority of the population. These advertisements have women in them looking good but very seldom are they talking. These advertisements put pressure on women to get that “thin look”. This extra pressure leads to low self-esteem and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Women are also portrayed as domestic laborers.
