An arguement that children that commit murder and other violent crimes should be tried as adults in court
If you commit a violent crime, should your age matter when you are sentenced? A better question is are you willing to become a victim to a violent minor after he gets released early because his age. I am certain I would not want this to happen to me. People that commit one violent crime are more likely to commit another one. We do not need these people free to go wherever they want. Instead of setting these people free or putting them in a low security juvenile prison, we should put them where the belong, in a

high security prison with others, regardless of their age, that commit the same type of crime. Juveniles that commit violent crimes are able to make their own decisions. Young criminals know that they can get by with their crimes. Until they are 18, they know that the government claims that they are not responsible for their own actions. By law, if you are 10 years old or younger, you are pardoned from all charges. Any minor from 10 to 14 years can

only get 6 months of imprisonment. If you are 14 to 16 years old, you can only get up to half the sentence that a convicted adult could get from committing the same crime. Any child may also not be handcuffed or put with adult criminals. These facts prove that it is absurd that these violent juveniles are not getting the punishment that they deserve. In conclusion, if you do not want to

be a violent young criminal's next target, you will agree that putting these dangerous people in a jail is the best decision for our country to

Not a day goes by where our national media doesn’t report on stories involving heinous and criminal acts committed by juveniles in the United States. Juvenile delinquency is a fact of life – ranging from minor status offenses to unimaginable acts of violence. When dealing with young offenders, there are always difficult decisions to make concerning appropriate punishments that take both public safety and the needs of the juvenile into account. In response to a recognizable increase in youth crime, getting tough on juvenile delinquency and holding young offenders more accountable has been the national trend in the past two decades (Brinks, 2004). Many argue that removing juveniles from the environment in which their crimes were committed is the most successful deterrent of future negative behavior. But what does secure confinement provide these…

Research shows that the rate at which juvenile violators of the law turn their lives around as opposed to older violators is remarkable. With the use of rehabilitation, psychological guidance, and some punishment is efficient to teenagers who are convicted of crimes. Sentencing a 12-year old to life in prison just seems morally unjust, especially when he has a high probability of turning his life around with some help.…

First, if children are not tried as adults and are released there is no telling if they will continue to do criminal acts or not. Typically, juveniles who display a propensity for committing crime will continue to do so, even as they get older. Their crimes may even become more serious in nature. Therefore, teens that commit heinous crimes should be punished for their obnoxious behavior. In “Juvenile Doesn’t Deserve Life Sentences” by Gail Garinger, he states that “a juvenile doesn’t deserve life in prison because most teens haven’t reached their full maturity”.…

“Five years ago juveniles were being tried for shoplifting, now we have murders, breaking out car windows … it all ties into gang activity. Six to eight months ago, a juvenile I represented said he wanted to be in a gang, so he robbed an elderly woman.” Juveniles should be convicted as adults for violent crimes because when they commit a crime and don't get caught or have any consequences after, they are basically walking around our streets with no one to notice they are criminals. If they did it once, they can do it again and get away with it. A crime is a crime no matter what the age of the criminal, they need to be punished.…

Juveniles shouldn't get sentenced to life without parole for committing a crime at a young age. A punishment is necessary but, sentenced to life without parole at a young age is devastating. Why should they even continue to live? They are young and deserve a second chance to rehabilitate. All we do is just throw these kids in prison and forget about the. What these kids need is treatment especially, those raised in violet environments. Sometimes they grow up unaware of what's good or bad. It may not be there fault. I'm not stating that they don't deceive a punishment, what the need is a punishment but also the support of a person.…

I feel the law should be abolished is that the juvenile can be charged as an adult in the legal court system. The traditional rule is that anyone who is under 18 is a juvenile and will be tried in the juvenile court system. However, in certain circumstances, almost every state now allows for youths below the age of 18 to be tried as an adults. Some states give juvenile court judges to power to have juvenile’s case tried in adult criminal court. Some states give power to prosecutors the power to decide whether or not a juvenile will be tried as an adult. In some states,…

“The only effective way to reduce and prevent juvenile crime is to balance tough enforcement measures with targeted, effective and intervention initiatives.” Juveniles are children and children don’t know any better and obviously make mistakes. They don’t expect to be caught after committing a serious crime. Juveniles brains are not fully developed until they are 25, but young people recognize them as adults at the age of 18. About 25,000 children a year have their cases sent to adult courts instead of being tried in juvenile courts, whose convicted defendants are usually set free by the time they turn 21. Trying juveniles as adults is not beneficial for them. But it also is a crime. And crimes are crimes whether…

In Kentucky, and in many other states as well, after the age of 18 you are considered an adult. This is the level of majority. If someone were to commit a crime at this age or older they would be tried as an adult. Children under the age of 18 cannot be sentenced to death or to life without possibility of parole. This is because children are physically incapable of making mature, responsible, well processed decisions. Opinions from one person to the next differ as there are several reasons concerning juveniles how they should be treated and tried in criminal cases (Southerland). The issue may be more of a debate as some people would say that kids do not have enough reasoning and lack common sense. Others, on the other hand, would say that juveniles have plenty of brains and common sense. There are strong reasons as to why juveniles should not be tried as adults and should not be eligible for life without parole.…

Placing a juvenile into a secure facility is not advantageous to the juvenile and has nor proven to be to be beneficial to society either. Statistics show that almost half of the juveniles in custody have not committed a violent crime or one that was against another person (Elrod & Ryder, 1999). Secure facilities resemble prisons where offenders are locked down and kept away from the public, but provide no real systematic approach for helping the juvenile down a path that will lead them to being a successful member of society. Secure facilities also have a growing problem with violence within their walls and escapes attempted. Although the majority of the juveniles who are incarcerated in a facility came in for a non-violent reason, the method…

A movement has taken hold of our country to change the juvenile justice system, and erase any distinction between young offenders and adult criminals. Almost all fifty states have changed their juvenile justice laws, allowing more youths to be tried as adults and scrapping long-time efforts to help rehabilitate delinquent kids and prevent future crimes. It seems to be plain and simple, a minor in this country is defined as a person under the age of eighteen. How then can we single out certain minors and call them adults? Were they considered adults before they carried out an act of violence? No. How then, did a violent act cause them to cross over a line that is defined by age? The current debate over juvenile crime is being dominated by two voices: elected officials proposing quick-fix solutions, and a media more intent on reporting violent crimes than successful prevention efforts. Minors should not be tried as adults in our society today. This is obvious through looking at propositions by our government such as Proposition 21, which is statistics on juvenile crime from specific cases where minors were sentenced in adult courts.…

“Campaign for Youth Justice (CFYJ) claims that placing juveniles in adult jails increases the likelihood that they will later be re-arrested for more serious crimes. Thus, the organization reasons, the practice of prosecuting juveniles as adults decreases public safety and should be abandoned”. This organization is stating that if a child is sent to an adult prison it will not help the individual or society. They claim that a rearrest is imminent. If the child is instead sent to a treatment facility they may gain the tools necessary to not become a repeat offender. Therefore making them less of a threat to themselves and the public. Another example of why children should not be tried as adults is jails are not a safe place for the youth and can give the child yet another traumatic experience. “It is extremely…
