For many years, capital punishment has been used as the most extreme measure of discipline given to those who are deemed guilty enough to deserve it. Capital punishment is defined as “the legally authorized killing of someone as punishment for a crime”. Currently, fifty-eight nations continue to practice capital punishment as they see the death penalty as well deserved for some. However, many nations have abolished this practice since arguments by humanitarians and others have adjudged it to be barbaric and too cruel of a punishment. The latter is why I strongly agree that capital punishment should be abolished. The following reasons explain why I can attest to this.
Firstly, the death penalty violates the right to life which happens to be the most basic of all human rights. Also, if a person is punished for the killing of one person, what lesson is being taught when you kill that criminal? In my opinion, both situations fall into the line of murder. Everyone should have the right to live and to correct their wrong doings. The death penalty does not cater to this however, which is my main reason why it should be abolished.
Secondly, the death penalty may be seen to some criminals as an “easy way to get out”. As many persons commit crimes to either better their lives or to worsen the lives of others, a punishment which inflicts pain for very little time is nothing compared to the years of regret that will be faced by that person if he or she is put into jail. Therefore, persons who are aware that the death penalty may be the ideal punishment according to the state for their crime may not think twice before they commit the crime. The death penalty therefore does not deter crime effectively.
Thirdly and most inequitable, capital punishment is indeed irreversible and therefore, if an innocent person is falsely accused of any crime and given the death penalty, after his or her execution, it cannot be
