Why and How?
The question above is one of major debate. Is dance a sport or an art? Is a dancer an artist or an athlete? From what I have researched, there is no correct or incorrect answer to this question. So, I will give support for each side.
Sport: Some say that dance is a sport because it requires stamina, agility, strength, and endurance. This is true, because there are numerous other sports who require the same skills. Whether it’s Cross Country, Track, Football, Volleyball, baseball, or soccer, they all require those elements.
Art: On the other hand, others believe that dance is an art form. They see it this way, because dance is not played on a field, in a gym, or on a court-- it takes place on a stage; just like drama, choir, and comedy. Dance, like drama is a series of movements that are aesthetically pleasing, just like drama-- and often accompanied by music that adds to the visuals, just like a choir. Finally, dance-- like all three (drama, choir, comedy)-- is used to express yourself for an

As for the physical state, dance relies heavily on a person’s weight and muscle. In one hour of ballet dancing, one loses 432 calories. After a few years of dancing, the muscles in a dancer’s legs and glutes develop, giving stronger muscles and form. My dance instructor-- Jo-- is constantly telling my class that dance relies heavily on abdominal strength. Since dance is a series of quick, melodic, paced moves, a dancer must be based on a strong center core. A dancer’s form needs essential strength to successfully complete turns and jumps, and the delicate skill of landing and moving with agility and grace. Coordination is the next major part of being a dancer, and though I may not be the most coordinated person, I am able to do several things at once, which, dancing also relies on. Adding to that-- if you are in a partner dance, you have to possess the ability to move yourself in multiple ways, and still be in synch with your partner and the music, all while completing and achieving proper form, as well as

Some religions might view dance as promiscuous or offensive with mere basic body movements such as a hip sway or that of similar movements. For example, most people generally view a traditional form of dance, the belly dance, in the Islamic culture as “sexual” yet that is not the sole purpose of it whatsoever. Even in today's society, people are aware that the image of sex is everywhere and can even be seen in the modern day dance culture. Regardless of a person's religious background, values, or beliefs, anyone can decide on what they consider to be art. All of these factors can influence one's decision on what art is to them.…

When a person thinks of the word ‘sport’ their minds go to the big three: baseball, basketball, and football. The body is intricately made and can do amazing things. Dancers tap into the muscles of their body that many people do not know exist, much like athletes. A dancer trains hard, spends hours in the studio, is always looking to improve their skills, and engages in competition. The same can be said about football, basketball, and baseball players. People assume that dance is not as challenging or aggressive on the body as other sports. But I, as a dancer, can validate that it is just as hard and uses large groups of muscles to complete certain steps, or moves. Dance has potential to be classified as a sport by society, when all evidence and support is considered.…

When football players and hockey players practice and play they use all their muscles in their body to help win and play. While people say dancers only use their leg muscles and that’ it. They only use their legs to jump and leap everywhere across the stage. Last reason why dance isn’t a sport is because if you are a dancer you call it that. If you aren’t a dancer you may call it a art instead of a sport. In 2002 SPPA found out only 39% call it an art 52% call it a sport and 8% didn’t care what they called…
