On August 9th, 2014, 18 year old Michael Brown got into a physical confrontation with Officer Darren Wilson. Brown attempted to pull Wilson’s gun out of his holster and shoot Wilson. There was a struggle between Wilson and Brown. In self-defense, Wilson shot and killed Michael Brown. After his death, there was a worldwide outbreak. The town of Ferguson believed that the only reason Brown was killed because he was black, and officer Wilson was white.…
Black Bart didn’t start out a robber, he started as a normal child. Charles E Bolles (Black Bart's real name), was born in 1829 in Norfolk, England. He was the third of ten children and son of Charlie and Maria Bolles. His family sailed to America when Charles was two years old. They went to Jefferson County, New York where Charles’s father bought a farm. Here, Charles grew up. He received a normal school education for the time, but especially excelled at sports. He stayed in New York until he decided to go to join in on the California Gold Rush.…
In recent news, there has been much talk about the Ferguson racial issues. Ferguson, Missouri has become infamous for its recent riots and protests. An African American teenager named Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white police officer. What happened on the night of August 1st is Officer Wilson was notified of a robbery and pursued Brown in his vehicle. Wilson came across Brown and was able to stop him with his car. There was a confrontation that Wilson allegedly fear for his safety and felt the need to discharge his firearm. After and foot chase, the police officer took down Brown with a fatal shot. The after math of this caused many protests and riot among the black community. Many people claim that the officer did not need to shoot the teen. The court decided that Officer Wilson was not guilty and caused an uproar within the Ferguson community. The author of the recent article attempts to explain the cultural differences between their white and black community and why these mistakes could be made. The main problem here is that the white and black communities simply do not understand each other. In the author attempt to prove this, he analyzed a series of tests to explain why many people can be confused in interracial issues. When people before the test claimed that they “do not see color”, it proved to be wrong. In fact, when a child is born, at about three months of age they understand the concept of race and they will prefer to be around their own race. This is means that there is still a form of racism. We cannot deny the facts that human beings have different cultures and unique trends within each race. Having said this, it also does not mean that noticing these things make certain people racist. The problem occurs here when a certain racial group tries to say that they are above another group. Profiling is the main way this is done in the instance like the shooting in the…
Brown’s friend who was with him claimed that Darren Wilson yelled at the boys to stop and used foul language. He then said that Wilson pulled out his gun and began to shoot at the same time he warned the boys. At that point they were both scared for their life and ran, but Brown got down and put his hands in the air. Even though Brown surrendered, Wilson continued to shoot and hit Brown six times. Wilson had to right to shoot Brown because he was unarmed and not a threat. Brown was an African American and Wilson was white. We must not rule out the fact that this could have been an act of racism and an issue of justice. It was not necessary for Wilson to shoot Brown especially because he was…
Dr. Brown’s article was well written and provided many sources for the information he presented the reader with. One thing I liked was the fact that he gave the reader an unpopular view of the standard conservative white man, from none other than Mr. Bill O’reilly. I know of Mr. O’reilly because my mom watches the Fox News network to hear the opinions of conservatives compared to liberal networks like MSNBC. But, for some reason whenever I hear her talking back to the television it’s always a disagreement with whatever Bill O’reilly, who’s a commentator on Fox News, has to say. In the article Dr. Brown showed an example of how the majority of America viewed the outcome of the Trayvon Martin trial. He stated that, “Bill O’Reilly aptly captured the dominant rationale used to justify the violation of black Americans, in general, and black males’, in particular, legal and civil rights. That is, Mr. O’Reilly when responding to President Obama’s speech regarding the not guilty verdict in the Trayvon Martin[3] case remarked”:…
It was sad to read on this subject, and I understood that Michael Brown, a black unarmed teenager was shot dead on August 9, 2014, by Darren Wilson, a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Therefore, many people came to protest this crime who do not believe it is fair that this happened. I also think it's not fair. The boy was unarmed and that there is not just killed this way. The official and had fired two shots and instead of taking the child to the hospital for his wounds heal and then prosecute or bring to trial. The policeman preferred to throw more bullets, he made the young life lost. Many people think this is because there is still racism, and among other things that discriminate against African Americans…
John and his three other siblings grew up in an incredibly religious home. Both of his parents were deep believers that America was God’s way to let Christ return to Earth, and slavery was the only thing preventing this. Growing up learning all of their beliefs, this eventually led him to believe that all of the crimes he was committing were okay, since this was God’s mission for him and his family. Brown’s mission began when he was just 12 years old, and witnessed a slave killed by his owner. It was this moment where he swore to himself that he would fight against slavery.…
Negroland, written by Margo Jefferson, is a memoir about her life, as wells as others in 1947 Chicago. In the book, Negroland residents acquire “provisional privilege” and aim to live their life’s away from the shadows of their poorer, darker counterpart. What particularly stood out to me the most about Negroland was their black skin, but despite the racially charged era, Negroland members utilized the freedom of opportunities allowed that other African Americans were not afforded. Nevertheless, the privilege they acquired were restricted every time they grabbed those opportunities, and further detained black elites from supporting their middle to lower class African Americans.…
Would you go to extremes and kill an excessive amount of innocent people all because you thought you were right? This merciless, cruel man thought exactly that, John brown needs to be viewed in history as an terrorist who killed innocent people, as he did in the Pottawatomie massacre and Harpers Ferry. John brown took his beliefs to an extreme and brutally murdered anyone and everyone who believed differently than him. He was said to be a believer in god and that he was killing for God but his actions were not justified by the religion and bible. LAstly, the 1850s was a time of violence and disagreement, especially on the topic of slavery, but using this as an excuse to Joon Brown’s bloodthirsty acts of terror is wrong.…
On August 9, 2014 Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. This event led to protests that lasted for weeks to fight for Michael Brown’s rights along with African American rights. The police officer, Darren Wilson, who shot and killed Brown was declared not indicted by a judge which caused even more anger in Ferguson. Many people showed their anger by setting several buildings and businesses on fire. I believe that different police policies, training, or administration could have prevented the events in Ferguson, Missouri.…
Many sociologists believe that race is a social construction. Social construction is defined in plain English as something that we the human race created on our own. When sociologists say that race is a social construction they obviously do not mean that we created the variance in physical features of many humans. What they mean is that we coined the term “race” and use it as a separator and an identifier of a large group of people. For example, Black, White, Asian, Hispanic these are race classes our society has created and defined. I believe the European explorers were the first constructors race. As explorers travel across the seas to new lands they became in contact with different humans whom had built a society much different than European society. These new societies…
After the civil war, racial tensions in public areas were very high. Supreme Courts allowed each state to mandate their own separate, but equal, policies. In the 1930s, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) opposed and challenged the Jim Crow laws set forth for the Department of Education. In the 1950s, the court systems realized that separating the races was irrelevant to providing a quality education.…

Within our country, I see a number of problems we face on a daily basis. An enormous problem we are facing that is becoming out of hand is the issue of racism. In the past few months, there have been quite a few instances of racism being the cause of death. The case that sticks out the most in my opinion is the Charleston church shooting. A white man entered a historically black church and opened fire, killing nine people, one of whom was a pastor. The man who shot those innocent people was a racist individual who had no respect for his fellow Americans, or for his Lord. He walked inside a place of worship to kill people solely because of the color of their skin. That act of hatred in unacceptable under every circumstance. I fully believe in…
All over the world there are people who are ‘different.’ These people who society labels ‘different’ experience prejudice, discrimination, and sometimes-even violence for their race, skin color, or religious belief. In Africa when a black mother and father give birth to a white child they either try to get rid of it because they don’t believe it’s theirs or they understand that their child is albino. Being albino means having no skin or hair pigmentation due to lack of melanin production. If you are albino in Africa you are subject to a life of fear and rejection by many people.…
