Argument Essay
The search for extraterrestrial life has been ongoing for hundreds of years. Extraterrestrial life can be defined as life that does not originate from Earth. It is also called alien life, or, if it is a sentient and/or relatively complex individual, an "extraterrestrial" or "alien". The ancient Greeks were the first to theorize about extraterrestrial life. They debated and learned about space to discover what they could. In 1896, Nikola Tesla, firmly believed that he had received communication from an Alien Civilization. He was not able to prove his claim with evidence, but this sparked the modern search for life (Ivan). Throughout the 1900’s the search grew. Research institutions, such as Cornell, MIT, and Harvard, have been searching for life. NASA has been searching for decades and have found some very convincing data of possible life. They have used several telescopes, …show more content…
This telescope is in orbit above Earth and has a great view of outer space. The goal for this telescope is to survey the Milky Way Galaxy and to discover Earth size planets that are in their star’s habitable zone. A habitable zone is commonly reffered to as “the Goldilocks zone”. It is a range of distance from a star where a planet is not too close or too far to harbor water. It is receiving just the right amount of energy to have water and be like Earth. When a planet is located it is named after the star with an attatched letter corresponding to how close it is to the star compared to other planets. (Brennan). An example, of the naming would be with our planet. We are the 3rd planet from the Sun so we would be Sun-C. The hope is to eventually find life outside of our planet. So far, Kepler has been very successful. NASA has used this tool to discover over a dozen planets that are in their star’s habitable
