the schools provided a favorable environment that would attract students from zones outside their regions. The magnet schools model developed a special curriculum focus that included science, art, technology, vocational training, Math or career paths. Therefore, students were voluntary enrolled into the magnet schools based on their interests in the theme that was offered by the school and not merely because of their geographic location. This way, the schools managed to attract students from diverse backgrounds hence curbing racial segregation against the minorities.
Currently, 100 magnet schools have been developed throughout New York City. These schools serve a population of about 67,325. These schools serve a diverse population of students drawn from all geographic spheres with minority groups comprising the majority. Of the total population of students enrolled in Magnet schools in New York City, minorities groups make up 74% of the total student population which is way above the average minority population in the city which is at 55% (Public School Review). As such, magnet schools in New York City, are serving their purpose of ending racial segregation in the education sector.
