Argumentative Essay: Should School Start Later?
Sleep argumentative essay
Should school start later? I think school should start at 8:30 so some students need time to eat breakfast and some busses do not get to the terminal until 8:10, those students have only 5 minutes until school starts. I think that being late and not being able to eat breakfast is also a reason for decreasing academic performances at Konawaena High School. Also if school started around 9 or 10 A.M it would mean that any extra curricular events clubs and sport practices would end later at night. My last idea is if school started later in the day, would students actually spend the time sleeping? I think that they will stay up later at night because know they know that school starts later i can stay up until 11 P.M because

Some buses arrive approximately at 8:00 A.M or even 8:10A.M! The students that ride one of those buses have only five minutes to go from the bus terminal to the cafeteria, then some of the people have to wait in the line for all of the remaining time until school starts. So it is 8:15 A.M and students just got their breakfast and they haven't ate anything this morning, they have two choices. One is to throw away their food and go to class, or two, they can eat quickly and hope they can get into the classroom by 8:21 so they do not get into trouble. So the question for you is, what are the students supposed to do when they get their breakfast at 8:15, and what can change so the students of Konawaena High School can eat their …show more content…
According to The National Sleep Foundation, sleep deprivation has consequences for our academic achievement. That means that if our students lack sleep it is very possible that most of the students are not getting enough sleep. If students are not getting enough sleep there is one thing we can do, it is to start school a little later. If we start school an hour or so later students will have time for extracurricular sports and events, and we could still follow the same schedule that is in place

According to Sarah Mckibben, author of the article “Wake up Calls”, which is based off of a study by the National sleep foundation, states that “69% of U.S. high school students get fewer than 8 hours of sleep on school nights.” This fact proves the point that students are struggling to go to bed and manage their time. By letting start times stay as they are, students can easily teach themselves the appropriate time for bed and the appropriate time to do homework. Students could have a better understanding of time management which may be helpful when they start seeking…

For the past few years, the Littleton Public Schools district, along with other school districts around the country, discussed the idea of the change of school start and end times. For the most part of this school year, the district has started to ask parents and students for their opinions and to come up with different solutions that will appeal to everyone. One of the biggest reasons that the district would need to change the times befalls the lack of sleep that students receive. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Researchers have found that 59% of middle schoolers and 87% of high schoolers are getting less than the recomended 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night (National Sleep Foundation). “Conflicts between parents and school districts”(Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health) the conflict with starting school later has had a lot of controversy. Parents think that it is horrifically challenging to move schedules up and back with the school districts. Why? Parents have busy schedules with work and have to change their work setting or call into their job and say that they are late. It is a very confusing aspect because students want to start later for the better benefit of them. On the other hand parents have to get to work early and make sure that there kids are at school at the same time. Parents seem to struggle abundantly when it comes to school starting later. Sometimes they have to call someone to take their kids because they have a different working schedule than their kids going to school. It is a very beneficial change that people in schools need to look into because students seem to like the idea of it. It benefits them on their sleep and the way the day…
