Even though President Bush lost the popular vote in 2000, he was still able to win the election because he still had the majority. There are 538 total votes in the Electoral College and a presidential candidate must win a majority of the electoral votes to be elected, exactly 270. In 2000 there were a total of 538 electoral votes available with 270 needed to win the election between George Bush and Al Gore. Bush won 271 electoral votes by winning over more states that count for more electoral votes. Al Gore, won only 266 electoral votes and even though he won the popular vote, the states he won in did not count for enough electoral votes, therefore Bush…
With all the mischief in the 2000 election of Bush vs Gore, Gore should have won the election. In the election there were many votes that needed to be counted by were not allowed. For instance in Florida there were 51 counties with 9000 uncounted ballots to go, Bush was only up by 98 votes at that time but the recount was stopped by the Florida Supreme Court.…
In November 26, 2000 the election between Gore and Bush made history with their controversial electoral votes, it was total mayhem. The only reason why Gore didn’t win was because the Florida Supreme Court decided to stop counting the ballots and to just give Bush the presidential spot. Gore’s team took forever, they even passed the due date they were suppose to turn in the ballots. There was so little time to count all those ballots that weren’t completely punched out, the news and the people went insane, up to the point were they even had strikes, the people needed answers and a president as soon as possible. There was about 175,010 ballots that weren’t counted. Gore gained about half a million plus more popular votes than Bush did, and personally…
I realize that it is opposite of the manner in which this school had begun, but it seems as though we have little choice. We already have a faculty unit that is looking to form a union due to the budget crisis, we should probably consider coming back to them with a better long-term plan in place.…
In December of 2000, the United States Supreme Court made a decision that ended the dispute about the 2000 presidential election in favor of George W. Bush. The Court ruled that the Florida Supreme Court 's method for recounting ballots was a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The reason for this was the lack of equal treatment of all the ballots cast in Florida. The Court also ruled that no alternative method could be established within the time limits set by Title 3 of the United States Code (3 U.S.C.), § 5 (Determination of controversy as to appointment of electors), which is December 12. Three concurring justices also…
Even from the earliest points in his life, Bernie Sanders has been a powerful example of bravery. Born to Polish immigrants in 1941, Sanders was not blessed with prosperous childhood years, as he grew up in a cramped Brooklyn apartment. However, during these early years the future senator and now presidential candidate began to form an interest in the political world. In an interview with the Guardian newspaper, he proclaimed, “I saw unfairness. That was the major inspiration in my politics.” (bio) Being surrounded by economic and social disparity, Sanders decided to transcend and battle his way through the obstacles presented before him. During his time at the University of Chicago, he became an active leader in the Civil Rights movement, assisting in the organization of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Reflecting on his call to action, the senator states,…
In the year 2000, prominent presidential candidates raced hectically against each other. The main two political parties chose Al Gore for the Democrats and George W. Bush for the Republicans. The phrase, "too close to call", squandered endlessly as the electoral college could not predict the future leader even on Election Night due to the fact that the margins were almost indistinguishable. Florida, the fourth largest electoral vote state, had a nail biting recount due to the ambiguity of the final results. Nonetheless, here contends the political and economic effects of the campaign, and the way the nation changed due to the decisions of the winner.…
Supreme Court had ever had to deal with because it was down to which president the United states would have for the next four years and most-likely eight years. The Supreme Court denied Florida to manually recounting the ballots because they said that it violated the 14th Amendment and that everyone has the same rights and that recounting ballots didn’t follow Due Process. For a long time the Supreme Court was trying to see how they could challenge the Florida Supreme Court. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Florida Supreme Court needed to revote on their decision because there was no explanation for their reasoning, but after their decision the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on the issue challenging the state ruling and saying that the manual recount was unconstitutional. This elaborated on how much power the Supreme Court really has. The Supreme Court directly overturned a state's ruling because the judges on the stand disagreed with their…
In the days since Mike Pence was announced as an honorary degree recipient and the principal speaker at Notre Dame’s Commencement this May, I have both overheard and been a part of many conversations debating the University’s decision to invite Vice President Pence to campus for such a significant event.…
Terrorism has taken part of all of our lives. At least once a week, some type of terrorism has happened or tried. President Obama discussed how he took cautious views on fighting terrorism and Isis. Mr. Obama is reluctant to having more Americans die fighting at war with terrorism. Although, it's also understandable to just want to end the war completely. This is the Republicans argument. Republicans would just like to send troops to fight the war in the Middle-East ending once and for all. In order to the long awaited war, it takes more resources, like machinery, weapons, money, and troops. Republicans also feel the situation we're in now, it's vital to demolish any chance of Iran having nuclear weapons for protection of America and the rest…
Electoral College is a process that involves the electors and the congress they meet to vote for the president and vice president. The Electoral College has five hundred thirty eight electors. Out of those five hundred thirty eight electors, only two hundred seventy are required to elect the president. Each state has their own group of electors. People help choose their electoral vote when they choose their candidate. Each candidate has a group of electors before you even vote for them. “Winner-Take-All” is an award of all electors to the winning presidential candidate. When the presidential election is over your governor gives a Certificate of Ascertainment saying all of the candidates who ran for your president in your state also with the electors as well. The certificate that the governor gives also announces who won your state as president and it shows which electors will be representing your state at the meeting of the electors in…
he United States presidential election of 2000 was the 54th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 7, 2000. The contest was between Republican candidate George W. Bush and Democratic candidate Al Gore, who was the Vice President at the time. The election had been a very close one, and Florida was to be the deciding state that announced the winner. Voting machines were to be used for the first time, and manufacturers assured that they would make vote counting much easier and much more efficient. The reason that the election was so controversial was that a large portion of voters hailing from Palm Beach County in Florida had had a very difficult time in voting for their desired candidate. Firstly, the votes tallied…
Yes the Electoral college should be taken out of the constitution. The Electoral College requires a presidential candidate to have transregional appeal. No region has enough electoral votes to elect a president. So a solid regional favorite has no incentive to campaign heavily in those states, for he gains no electoral votes by increasing his plurality in states that he knows he will win. This is a desirable result because a candidate with only regional appeal is unlikely to be a successful president. The residents of the other regions are likely to feel disfranchised to feel that their votes do not count, that the new president will have no regard for their interests..It should be taken out of the constitution because it creates the possibility…
One of the biggest problems with the Electoral College is that under the system you don’t need a majority of the national popular vote to win the election; in fact there have been cases, such as the 2000 election where the winner of the election did not even win the popular vote. In the 2000 election, George W. Bush faced off against Al Gore- the incumbent Vice-President. Throughout the election campaign the polls were coming up close- and the result was that indeed. Gore got 48.4% of the popular vote (50,999,897), whereas Bush lost on the popular vote as he only received 47.9% (50,456,002). However, Bush won in the Electoral College and therefore won the election. Bush received 271 EC votes compared to Gore’s 267. This result had even more controversy surrounding it as it all came down to the swing state Florida, there were a number of votes which had a ‘hanging Chad’ and were deemed by the Supreme Court to be ruled out as counted votes. This ruling meant that Bush won Florida, and the election. Since then there has been much call for change to the electoral system as Bush was able to become president without actually winning the national popular vote. This means that there were more people in the country…
Secondly, do you agree with election 2000? I surely don't, I mean the wrong president won the election. Gore received 500,000 more votes than Bush. But who won the election, Bush. All because of a policy called the Electoral College. It is a very controversial issue. I know that many people are unhappy about this election. I thought we were a democracy! And we choose are president, not electors.…
