Argumentative Synthesis: For Abortions
Before 1967, abortion was illegal in the UK. However, backstreet abortions were done, often ending in permanent injury or death. The 1967 Abortion Act was introduced to provide a safe alternative to backstreet abortions (Abortion). In 1973, the Supreme Court handed down its Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions legalizing abortion in all 50 states during all nine months of pregnancy, for any reason, medical, social, or otherwise. The vast majority of all abortions performed today are done for social, not medical reasons (McGee). Traditionally, abortion was the point of serious arguments for and against this phenomenon in the majority of societies. As a rule, a significant part of the society is against abortion but on certain conditions even conservatives agree that abortion may be necessary or even inevitable. Anyway, the society must be very careful resolving the problem weather to support or completely reject abortion ideas but at the same time women must have a choice and a chance for abortion (Alex). What personal, familial, social and economic factors lead to the decision to end a pregnancy? Some believe a woman should have the right to choose to have an abortion, whatever the reason. She should not have to persuade two doctors that she is making the right choice. Each year, nearly 1.2 million American women have an abortion to end a pregnancy (WebMD)
. The most common reasons women consider abortion are because they cannot afford a baby, the baby may be severely disabled or sick when born, or pregnancy resulting from rape or incest.
