Affirmative Action in college enrollment policies
On March 6, 1961 President John F. Kennedy signed Executive Order 10925. Out of this Executive Order the term Affirmative Action came about. Affirmative Action is a set of policies and orders passed for the purpose of countering the effects of hundreds of years of discrimination against minorities, like African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans. It counteracts the centuries of discrimination by promoting equal opportunity such as giving opportunities to minorities in increasing their representation in areas of employment, education, and business. Minorities were not thought as equals to the white man, they were looked as inferior. African Americans were enslaved for about three centuries. Following slavery came segregation, which was enforced by law and social bias. This also affected other minorities. Discrimination means differential treatment due to not agreeing with the majority standard, in appearance, beliefs, or culture. Discrimination still exists to this day. But it is no longer backed by policy. Minorities had to endure discrimination through segregation that where backed by policies and laws. In the Ethics Theory and Contemporary Issues book Robert K. Fullinwider compares Affirmative Action as a method of compensation, not as a method of advantage. He compares the United States as a land of giants and he places humans in this land of giants as minorities.”They would be puzzled and wonder what in the world to make of us..the would probably conclude thaat though we were like them in many ways, still we were quite incapable, incompetent, iferior creatures- for although we have our charming side, we really cant manage to do well even in the simplest tasks in Giant Land ”. This is what he says that minorities go through. It is not the fact that minorities are inferior to the white population but the fact that the U.S was made by and for the white man. “the problem does not lie in us, it lies in the fact that everything in Giant Land is built to the scale of Giants.” Affirmative Action is not intended as a tool to disadvantage the majority but to compensate for there way of thinking and in may ways helping the minority to catch
