Affirmative Action in college enrollment policies

On March 6, 1961 President John F. Kennedy signed Executive Order 10925. Out of this Executive Order the term Affirmative Action came about. Affirmative Action is a set of policies and orders passed for the purpose of countering the effects of hundreds of years of discrimination against minorities, like African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans. It counteracts the centuries of discrimination by promoting equal opportunity such as giving opportunities to minorities in increasing their representation in areas of employment, education, and business. Minorities were not thought as equals to the white man, they were looked as inferior. African Americans were enslaved for about three centuries. Following slavery came segregation, which was enforced by law and social bias. This also affected other minorities. Discrimination means differential treatment due to not agreeing with the majority standard, in appearance, beliefs, or culture. Discrimination still exists to this day. But it is no longer backed by policy. Minorities had to endure discrimination through segregation that where backed by policies and laws. In the Ethics Theory and Contemporary Issues book Robert K. Fullinwider compares Affirmative Action as a method of compensation, not as a method of advantage. He compares the United States as a land of giants and he places humans in this land of giants as minorities.”They would be puzzled and wonder what in the world to make of us..the would probably conclude thaat though we were like them in many ways, still we were quite incapable, incompetent, iferior creatures- for although we have our charming side, we really cant manage to do well even in the simplest tasks in Giant Land ”. This is what he says that minorities go through. It is not the fact that minorities are inferior to the white population but the fact that the U.S was made by and for the white man. “the problem does not lie in us, it lies in the fact that everything in Giant Land is built to the scale of Giants.” Affirmative Action is not intended as a tool to disadvantage the majority but to compensate for there way of thinking and in may ways helping the minority to catch

With this the Committee on Equal Opportunity was created, and was mandated that "projects financed with federal funds ‘take affirmative action ' to ensure that hiring and employment practices are free of racial bias" (Brunner).     In a country the size of the United States, different races and different views on the equality of each race exist. Affirmative Action was a put in place by the Federal Government to help conserve the protection of rights towards minorities, whether it be determined by race or sex, during the time after the civil war when they people were still being discriminated upon based on these two aspects. Affirmative Action created a situation that allowed minorities a guaranteed spot within a workplace or a school, eliminating racism and allowing the minority to be recognized for its accomplishments. This may not have been the best solution for the problem but at the time it was put in place it was a necessary mean to try and correct an evil. Affirmative Action is still in place today even though it shouldn’t be. It creates discrimination by trying to get rid of it. Administration officers and CEO’s of companies feel the need to fill the percentage that they were given so they turn their backs on more qualified persons. With Affirmative Action, a white man may lose a chance to get a job or go to college, simply because the position must be filled with a black man, to meet the designated quota assigned. Also majorities look down on the minorities who get into colleges and get jobs over them by saying that they only got the job because someone just needed to get the spot filled so that they wouldn’t get shut down. This makes the minority feel worse about themselves because really don’t know if they got into the school or got the job based on their own merits or not. People in todays society want to make the most money possible so they will hire who they believe will do the best job whether it be an African American woman or a middle aged white man.
