Jackson Brooke, a 16 year old boy says that the school is underestimating boys maturity when they say that boys are distracted by girls clothes. Many schools, including Parras middle school, have a woman deciding the dress code and she assumes that boys are distracted by a girls belly button
or undergarments. However, many boys are saying the opposite. “The idea that a visible bra strap or a pair of leggings will prevent a teen boy from learning is absurd to me. And I should know, I’m a teen boy!” Jackson says.
Not only does the dress code favor men but also lets boys get away with more. At our school, Parras Middle, We have a rule that boys are not allowed to wear tank tops. However, I had a boy in my class who wore a tank top almost everyday and never suffered a consequence. Instead the faculty worries about a millimeter of girl stomach showing when they lift their arms up even though lifting their arms up at that height does not always occur in a girl's daily life.
Finally, making a girl leave school because she is creating a distracting learning environment for boys is saying that it is more important for boys to not have to see a girl's collarbone or shoulders than for that girl to be in class that day. “In Indiana, a 12-year-old student was suspended and missed two days of class. The offense: tight pants” Many girls see this as boys being more entitled to an education. And if you think about it is true. When a girl has to go home because she is creating a disrupting environment for boys the men might not be distracted anymore but that girl doesn't get to be in class at all.
It is important that schools imply dress codes that are fair to both genders. Both boys and girls deserve an equal education and that that starts with an equal dresscode. In 2106 it seems outrageous that girls still have to fight for their rights, even as early as middle school and for something as small as a dress code that can easily be changed.
