he Arleigh Burke Class destroyer owes its name to Admiral Arleigh Burke, a naval officer who served during both World War II and the Korean War. During his time in the Pacific Theater of WWII, he was credited with eliminating numerous Japanese surface, subsurface, and aerial combatants. He continued his work in Korea, where he eventually assisted in negotiating the 38th Parallel Armistice. On 17 August 1955, Admiral Burke was appointed to the post of Chief of Naval Operations, where he served out the remainder of his naval career until 1961, advocating for the development of nuclear powered surface ships, solid-fuel ballistic missiles, and a constant high state of readiness.
