Colonel Stas Preczewski, the coach of the Army Crew team for the United States Military Academy at West Point, in utter frustration now, since the Varsity (V) team, which is consisted of the top 8 rowers with excellent individual skills kept frequently losing to the Junior Varsity (JV). Coach P attempted to improve the performance of V team by used a variety of methods, but none of them worked well and there is only four days before the National championship races. Facing with this problem, Coach P has to make the decision among the choices of switching the Varsity and Junior Varsity boat, switching individual boat members or intervening to improve the Varsity boat’s performance.
For the case of Army Crew team, the problem is that the Coach P was not a good leader. He is maybe a good manager, but not a good leader in this case. He is working with a yellow and blue leadership style. For the rowers’ selection, Coach P tended to focus on the research and test reports, to pick the person with top individual talent and overlook the teamwork performance. For the training, Coach tried several methods to improve the team performance, but the result is that the V team was keep losing to the VJ team, Moreover, the VJ team was not only beat the V team, also beat the its team members psychologically. For the coming races, Coach P hesitated about which team should be appointed to the match, even there was only four days left, he still trying to recombine the teams. As a true leader, Coach P should set a direction first, and align team members with the direction, then, motivate team members. He maybe did a good job on the first one, but obviously, he should pay more attention on how to align and motivate his rowers.
For the whole army crew team, the team is not works as a real team. First, there was almost no support and interact inside the V team, between V team and VJ team, and between Coach P and these two teams. To declare that a team exists and to
