2. Summary. ADP/ADRP 3-09 discusses Fires doctrine and its application in support of unified land operations. The publication presents Fires concepts using Army, joint, and multinational Fires systems, to include Electronic Attack (EA). Fires is integrated into the commander’s concept of the operation via Fires planning based on targets identified through the targeting process. Planners synchronize Fires with the other warfighting functions to produce a synergistic effect on the battlefield. ADRP 3-09 also discusses Fires organizations and personnel at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels.

Chapter 1, Fires in Support of Unified Land Operations, is the heart of the Fires publication and describes Fires as a warfighting function and its role on the battlefield. It includes the 1) core competencies, 2) principals, 3) characteristics, and 4) employment of Fires systems within Fires doctrine.
