Question:
Bart wants to sell his car at the weekend car market held in a large parking lot at a local supermarket. Dolph runs an inspection service at the market checking out cars for potential purchasers. As part of the service he offers a written report as to the mechanical state of the vehicle.
Bart asks Dolph to inspect his car and prepare a report he says he will show to potential purchasers. Dolph agrees, inspects the car and issues a report stating that it is mechanically sound.
Bart shows the report to Milhouse, a prospective purchaser. Milhouse is impressed by the car and after reading the report he buys the car from Bart. However, when he takes it home to show his wife Lisa, she is not impressed. She hates the colour and orders Milhouse to sell it.
The following weekend Milhouse returns to the car market. Nelson inspects the car and shows interest in buying it. Milhouse shows him the report originally prepared by Dolph for Bart.
Nelson reads the report which he notes was prepared the previous weekend. He buys the car from Milhouse without getting another check on its mechanical condition.
A week later he notices that the steering is not accurate and the car tends to pull to the left when he brakes. Nelson takes the car to a mechanic, Maggie, who inspects it. She advises him that the steering problem is just one of a number that the car has. The other defects are consistent with the vehicle having been involved in an accident.
