The two artists I have chosen to compare are, Audrey Flack and Giorgio Morandi. They both work in very different movements and use their artistic skills in completely different ways. Audrey Flack works with photorealism that emerged in the 1960’s, where as, Giorgio Morandi worked with metaphysical painting from 1918-1922, but then later on focused on hue, tone, and the arrangement of his objects.
Audrey Flack is an American artist who specialises in photorealism painting. Photorealism emerged in the 1960’s, it looks closely into the detail of a painting, making it appear as a photograph. It is for highly skilled artists who are able to make paintings look completely lifelike. Audrey Flack is one of the leading artists for the movement of photorealism, for her symbolic motifs and story telling, where other artists just simply paint inanimate objects. Her themes through all of her paintings explore personal objects related to her life, her family and others, which is different to Morandi’s paintings as they don’t have a particular symbolic story or message. She explores powerful concepts of: female power, war, love and death, where as, Morandi enjoys the simplicity of form through calm, order and reflection.
The painting ‘Queen’ aims at projecting a view on being young and hold through the passing of time. Flack included a picture of her when she was younger and a picture of her older mother in a locket, to show the relationship between them but also showing a contrast within the composition between young and old. She places all the still life objects as if they have just been thrown together, in a compact, overlapping bundle. This makes the painting look very busy and crowded but also really exciting and interesting to look at. The tubs of lip balm and make up near the bottom of the painting, symbolise beauty, the concept of getting older and trying to make yourself look younger. She also puts across the thought of time, and time running
